Today's problem (longish post) 200

It seems that since I sold my truck and went back to school (at the ripe old age of 56), which forced me to use my 240 as 'everyday transportation,' I've had quite a few minor problems crop up from a leaky water pump to a flat tire (brand new Yokohama winter tire), to some leaky vacuum lines, to a broken odometer gear, to a leaky rear main seal. My son and I pulled the M47 and replaced the seal, but the clutch was already slipping at the time and had some oil contamination. My son cleaned the clutch and flywheel. The clutch had been replaced only a few thousand miles beforehand in the summer because of a previously leaking rear main, so it is almost new. Since the new rear main seal was replaced, I've been using the car mainly to drive a short distance back and forth to school, and I haven't noticed any oil leakage under or around the car. Today I took it on an extended highway drive and found that once everything warmed up, the clutch would chatter and slip if it was under a bit of load at highway speeds. I checked when I got home, and there was no oil leakage evident. This is my hypothesis, and I'm wondering if I'm right: The clutch still has some oil contamination in it, but it doesn't slip until things get warm and the oil loosens up a bit on the clutch surface.... Am I going to have to pull that gearbox again????

Double check the adjustment and maybe even put it on the loose side.

I've had several cars (240s & not~) that got oil-soaked clutches and chattered. Sometimes you burn it out; sometimes it chatters a little forever. I'd just drive it and not worry.

I'd just drive it and see if it improves, make sure the clutch is adjusted properly.

When I got my 93 w/ M47 the clutch slipped a little and I figured I would be replacing it soon. I put some miles on it and the slipping went away. That was about 6 years ago and all is still fine.

So maybe the oil will "burn off?" I would like that. I'm going to try to get through the winter the way it is and see how that works out. The clutch seems to be adjusted fine. It starts to "catch" as soon as the pedal leaves the floor and is fully engaged about halfway up.

The slipping usually occurs in 5th when going up a hill. After the downshift to 4th, to try to make it stop slipping, it'll slip in fourth, too. Most of this activity occurs at highway speeds, but I've had it slip after slowing down on an exit ramp, too.

I think the only adjustment is to make sure there is a little play in the cable when the clutch is at rest. I assumed my slipping was from little use prior to me getting the car. Mine also slipped in fifth gear only but there was no oil that I was aware of.
