Windshield Perimeter Body Work Followup 200

See http://www.brickboard.com/PRINT/?top=1446412 for the original thread that is now Read Only.

From another forum I got the following feedback:

"I think 90 still came from the factory w/ the metal trim clipped to the windshield, right? I'm thinking it was 91 that got the much improved windshield. The runner seal is built into the windhield and you don't use the clips at all. You definitely want the new style glass...not only is it easier to install but it seals better too."

I took the car to the body shop today for a work estimate. The windshield will be removed in mid-January, the rust issue resolved and the windshield reinstalled.

I have the 1990 old style windshield with the clips and the metal trim in the center of the rubber gasket around the windshield. I'm not sure what theses clips look like. To cut down on the cost, if the windshield is not damaged on removal, I will have it reinstalled.

Can it be reinstalled without the clips as per the 1993 windshield that has the runner seal built into the windshield? Or since it is a 1990 variant, must the clips be used?

Not know what either type of windshield looks like, I do not know if this is possible or makes sense.

Any pictures would help me understand this.

thanks

All, thanks for the great information.

If the old style windshield is damaged on removal, then I will *definitely* go with the newer style.

From speaking with the glass place, it is the clips on the older style windshield that make it difficult to install. But I'm not sure what the difficult is, and there is no one who still works there that is familiar with the use of the clips.

Thus my question of whether it can be reinstalled without the clips as per the 1993 windshield that has the runner seal built into the windshield? Or since it is a 1990 variant, must the clips be used?

    Anyone know?

    thanks

Just trying to save a few $$ on what is already some major rust work to resolve.

You can get a new windshield for about $200 installed. The 91-92 is the way to go IMO. Cleaner look, no need to re-use a gasket or buy a new one. AND you get perfectly clear glass, which is so nice. Your paying for instal anyway. Something to consider doing now if you can.

There might be some useful info on this thread I started a couple of months ago.

I had the windshield replaced on our '89 wagon a few years ago. We had the chrome strips around it but opted for a newer windshield that does not use them. It went smoothly, installing was no problem-but there was one issue. The newer windshield is evidently just a tad smaller in a couple areas as at those areas it did not cover completely the new paint job I had done about 6 months prior. It was barely notiecable on the top and bottom edge near the center, about maybe 1/16 of an inch and a few inches in length. Also the new paint was almost identical in color to the existing paint, so that helped. I just used a touch up that came with the paint job and you really can't see it now. Good installation, no leaks. I donno if that's something you need to be concerned about, just throwing it out there. I like the clean look of the windshield now moreso than before. If I ever replace the back hatch window I'll do the same.
