Pageda, Tony H, Goatman, Jorrell, et al...I did it!! BUT..... 200

Well, I was late leaving work as a customer I have been trying to get in showed up unannounced so...I was too lat eto pick up my new CPS to put in tomorrow. Bummer. I also was going to buy a new 12" swival breaker bar, too. After dinner, I went down to the garage and took a 10mm box-ended ratchet and reached in with my small hands, (by the way, that is just a myth!!) and it came out like it was butter. Happy? Yes, but it looks like new. Rubber is jet black and it still has clear grease at both ends at the connection. So, great practice! Then, I checked the relay under glovebox (white fuel) and took it apart and it looks like new. (the car has been garaged since 1990). So, I am happy but no solution. The song has ended but the malady lingers on. I hope this is something we can "fix" tomorrow as I want to go to NOrth Carolina soon and drive my brick. Thanks for ideas/solutions.

    Yup, change the relay 200

I agree with the other guys. Change the relay.

Not to beat a dead horse... You previously mentioned that you checked the 25 amp f.i. fuse. Did you also check the fuse housing for corrosion? The wiring is all good? Clean and tight at the battery end?

After what I went through with my 90 (my car died twice far from home), I'd replace everything so I wouldn't have to think about it again. New 25 amp fuse, fuse housing, new wiring, fuel pump relay and CPS. All that is still cheaper than one long distance tow. Think of it this way, you could have even more fun working on your car...:)

    Change the relay anyway 200

And if you like a consensus, I'll throw my hat in with Jerry to suggest you replace the relay.

The crank sensor and even the 25A fuse wiring can usually reveal their faults to visual inspection, but the microscopic gap in a circuit often hides in those fuel injection relays.

Another way to look at it is the garage will go a long way toward protecting the stuff under the hood but won't do a thing to keep a poor solder joint from cracking.

    You gotta do somethin'!

Why do banks leave vault doors open and then chain the pens to the counters.

Okay, I guess if I ask for advice, I should be smart enought to follow it. Art, so ven though the CPS is 5 years old and "LOOKS" okay, replace it and the relay?? It makes sense to have "KNOWN" good components, so...........I am just making sure I'm clear.

Leave the nice looking CPS.. change or reheat the solder joints on the Fuel Pump Relay.
The '90 still has the 25 amp fuse.. I tink. Pull that in and out a few times to clean the connections. See if your problem goes away.

Good job at snaking your hand down and around. Yes, it is just a rumor : )

Ken, let me expand on my reasoning.

You were planning to do nothing, even though you know the car might stall. Just do one thing, then, and if you were willing to risk its misbehavior, the risk will now be worthwhile, having eliminated the strongest suspect.

The relay is the strongest suspect in my remote vision because its mode of fault is the most well hidden from visual inspection. I can show you a crack in a Volvo relay circuit board here, but this just happens to be one that photographed well. These defects can be microscopic.

The CPS really needs a cracked cable to convince me it is possibly intermittent. The wiring to the battery is a little more complex, but if you take each piece apart and examine it for corrosion, you have, in effect, "done something."

On another subject (Rockville stuff and Brad) could you send me an email? benstein -at- cleanflametrap -dot- com.

I agree with Jerry. One time, I suffered for days trying to solve a problem after a visual inspection of a good looking fuel relay that turned out to be bad. If its not the problem, its very good to have a spare in the glove box.

I have looked at relays and thought they looked new. I actually enjoy just looking at them as they are quite marvelous, with that delicate wire, intricate but almost Rube Goldberg construction... I used to love to build models and like small things. But in fact what is wrong is often invisible to the naked eye. Tiny solder cracks will do them in. I'd suggest getting a known good one and swapping it in.

If it runs well enough to get to NC, drop me a line off-line, I'll be more than happy to help out if you are on I-40 near Winston-Salem.

      Jorrell

I am from Jamestown, about halfway between High Point and Greensboro. One of my brothers owns three dealerships in Asheboro (Honda,Mazda and Nissan) so if you ever have a problem, call and tell him we are friends. His name is Dan Lackey and surprisingly eniough, his stores are "Asheboro Honda, Nissa, Mazda". Thanks for the offer of help from you. Nice.

This pretty much wraps it up.............THANKS. 200

Ok. I am at work and it is Saturday morning.

Yesterday, after re-reading all the good advice and recommendations. I replace the CPS, the fuel pump relay and put an all-new 25amp fuse holder and bought 5 extra new fuses. Psychologically, I am ready and I think my brick is also ready. Now, if the state of Maryland will send my new "Historic" tag "1 BRICK" so I can display it, I am ready for the road. By the way, you've all probably heard by now, but Willie Nelson was rumored to have been hit by a truck down in Texas yesterday. (Yes, it seems that he was playing on the road again.)

Anyway, thanks to each of you who pretty much echoed the same advice and I really appreciate as always the interest and sharing.

        Ken
