Only the 1992 will swap with the 1991. As indicated the 93-94 cluster will swap but must be modified for the fuel gauge to work.

I read your contribution to 700/900 Yazaki speedometer repair in the FAQ. I have a dead speedometer from a 1994 940T in front of me. I have no trouble lifting the speedometer needle over the stop peg, but with CCW twisting and lifting, the needle does not want to come off. Can you give some more tips, before I resort to un-soldering everything?

I understand changing to the 1993-94 sending unit will make the 1993-94 fuel gauge work in the 1991-92 cars.

It is more about lifting and wiggling than it is about twisting. It is pressed on and the method of getting it off can only be described as "pulling".

If you have one of the upholstery crow's foot tools used to pull panel clips you might employ it in your efforts. It gives good support to the underside of the needle while levering it up- the bottom of it's "V" tucked right up around the pin.

A little wiggling will insure that the force is in line with the pivot point of the needle at least part of the time you are lifting with the crow's foot.

I was not aware that changing the sending unit would make the gauge functional. Karl Nitz came up with the work around that uses a capacitor from the 1991-1992 cluster board and resolders it into the 1993-1994 cluster board along with a jumper wire installation. While I have never done the cluster rework it would seem a lot easier to mod the cluster than it would to dive into the sender. However if that is indeed an option it needs to be in the FAQ's... perhaps it is and I am just not aware of it ???

Please post back with your experience. How can we improve the discussion on needle removal?

Randy

In case you don't find a replacement gauge to swap in, I posted the names of a couple repair shops earlier:

I wish you the very best of luck.

P.S.: Don't drive the car with the instrument cluster removed. The alternator will not charge properly without the test circuit (warning light bulb). I learned this the hard way.

The 91-2 Yazaki is infamous here, so congrats on carrying on the tradition. Heh

In the FAQ there is a lot about those; I think the 93-4 940 swaps in but you have to do a trick to make the fuel guage work. This is in the FAQ also.

There is a guy in SoCal who repairs them exchange/1yr warantee, $250-300.
