Help! Strong Smoke coming from vents 200 1988

Yesterday I was driving and smoke started emitting from my heater vents and defog vents. In a matter of miles it got pretty heavy- not super thick but very problematic. It caked all my inside glass with an oily residue (reducing visibility) and hot-boxed the whole wagon interior. It even left a hazy film on my driver side mirror as it bellowed out when I rolled the window down. Even after turning of the blower and closing the vents it poured out. This was all over the 4.5 miles to my mechanic's shop.
He (ASE master certified) instantly assumed valve cover gasket which did look oilier than usual. I ordered one and installed it today. I cleaned the oily residue off my glass as best I could. I want to say it didn't smoke for a mile or two but I was driving in the dark. 5.5 miles. It was still definitely smoking but more or less odorless. Again dangerously reducing my visibility from all angles and smoking out my interior.
I deep cleaned my valve cover inside and out so there's no burn-off from that. I want to say the smoke was somewhat less but I can't say for sure since its night time.
My oil last night was on the half-empty side but not too low. The day before this happened I resurfaced my alternator's small wire contact. (Don't know if it's relevant)

I've always had a very mild syrupy oil smell from the vents.
I'm going to ask my mechanic but does anyone have any advice.

    Lick the glass.

    Sweet?

    Easy (fast, clear) answer. Good!

    Coolant.

BUT hard and slow solution. Bad.

Probably heater core, but maybe you are lucky and it is another component?

    Good luck!

You don't say what kind of smoke. Based on the smell % location, probably coolant => Bad heater core.

Your "ASE master certified)" mechanic should be able to tell antifreeze from oil by smelling the interior or touching the inside glass and tasting.

Test yourself by warming engine. Put a drop of oil from the dipstick on the exhaust manifold. Then a drop of coolant. Which is it in your car?

You didn't say the last time you check your oil so the 1/2-qt low could be coincidence.

According to Car Talk, breathing coolant fumes is hazardous to your brain cells. Your symptoms have been diagnosed by the brothers several times. It is not smoke rather it is a mist of water and antifreeze which is oily and sweet smelling.

    door lock relay 200 1988

Probably a leak in the coolant system inside the passenger compartment. Eg. heater core.

Keep in mind that you could pull the hoses at the firewall which enter/exit and connect them together, thus bypassing the interior. Until you get to fixing. I seldom have the heat on in my 240.

Am surprised that your mechanic would suggest a valve cover gasket considering the problem was inside the car. I think he would have been closer if he'd suggested door lock relay.

It may very well be coolant, from a ruptured heater core. If it smells sweet - you mentioned syrupy - and seems to leave a taste in your mouth after breathing it, it's antifreeze. It might also be a simple hose connection to the core, so that's worth checking, but coming out of the vents usually means the core.
If so, it's not a fun job at all....

Echoes that, and as well that if
      a. the oil was low, and
      b. it was combustion-y smokey,

that it's the core Plus he may have a leaking head gasket, letting oil into the antifreeze.
I'd do a compression check to see where things are at.

To replace heater core, do it the quick and simple way!
      1. Remove windshield
      2. Remove dash
      3. (optional) Remove shotgun from rack, shoot the beast.
