The backup lights were not coming on my 1991 240 so I removed the cover on the backup switch and cleaned the electrical contacts, applied di-electric grease and replaced the cover. Now I have the backup lights working again, but my car will not start, fuel pump kicks in, radio, blower and all the other electrical components seem to work. Right after the repair when I tried to start it up, it was like the battery was dying and barely made a weak turnover. I tried boosting it to see if that would make it start, nothing still. I used steel wool to clean the contacts on the backup switch. Could that have created an electical problem from the little fine fibers in the steel wool? I am lost. Thanks.

Thanks to Art and everyone that responded. Problem solved. After cleaning all of the contact points, I failed to notice how worn the contacts on the wiper arm were. After I bent them in enough to make better contact in the switch, I have backup lights and the car starts.

Did you adjust the position of the switch when it was installed? It is also known as the neutral safety switch, not allowing you to start the engine in anything but park or neutral.

    From Art's website.

I did adjust the switch. The car started once and now it will not start. I noticed that when I have the switch turned on and I move the gear shifter as far forwrd as it will go, which is a centimeter beyond reverse, there is a clicking sound every time I push it to this point. Does this sound like there is a short somewhere? Also there were two small black wires attached to a connector which I assume is a ground that I attached to one of the screws that hold the backup swithc in place.

Can you tell me where to buy a Simpson guage for my 240, but only if it is something relatively straightforward to install. And does it go where the two openings are in the dash? I would love to be able to monitor my volts. Thanks.

          Euroman,

I scored mine on eBay on the cheap after months of looking, but something tells me this is not what you are imagining. Simpson meters are prized for their quality and accuracy. These meters are very high impedance, and I wired mine straight into a fused battery lead. It can stay on for months without killing the battery. You can buy one at list price here:

Here is what my installation looks like. Yes, there are holes now :)

I bent up some bottle caps and used them as reflectors for the miniature lamps. They work pretty well, and sometimes I leave the lamps lit while I go into the market. Catches lots of eyes for sure. Got to represent Volvo right? ;) Invariably my pitch black dog will be laying on the back seat and someone will poke their head into view, she’ll bark and scare the hell out of them.

LOL. Except for the dog, your dash looks like a 'test mule' that only an engineer could conjure up. You could at least hide the wires in the cracked vinyl?

I don't know, G man...I think Volvo might revoke your ownership if they were to see this.

                  oops! hit the wrong button...

                  Goatman

Thanks for the effort and pix. You know, opinions are like belly buttons.....everyone has one. I have friends who literally laugh at me for preferring to drive my 1990 Volvo 240. I refrain from saying they married wrong, wear ugly ties, etc. as those are their choices and I respect that. I heard alot of criticism about the guy who made a pick-up out of his 240 wagon but that's okay. I have changed my grille and a couple little things and those sre some of my choices. I know you have thick skin (...goat) and that you can handle jabs so that's good.

YOu probably are correct when you say that he Simpson is way over my need and I think really I mostly want to utilize the 'hole' that was provided and would like to have a practical use at the same time. Just an oil pressure and volt guage will be fine.

Anyway, thanks and don't let anyone get your ---- , no if ands or buts. (sorry about the goat references and just to show I can take it, too.....I'm not really even from Europe!!)

                  Ken

    Hi,

Does the starter operate, or does it just click?

It does nothing, not even a click, but I can hear the fuel pump operate. When ever I turn the switch on, I notice that the hand on the speedometer moves quickly to the high speed range before it immediately drops back to zero. Strange.

        S,

You need to check if your battery really is charged. My battery rests at 12.6 Volts as read with my panel mount Simpson Voltmeter on the dashboard. What is the voltage of your battery?

Check the voltage of the battery and post back. Also, very CAREFULLY clean the battery terminals making sure to avoid the pure lead dust.
