Executive summary: If you have a 240 wagon with a working tailgate wiper, I'd recommend re-lubing the wiper shaft before you burn out a motor. You can do it in about half an hour with things more or less in place, working inside the tailgate. If it seizes, the motor will burn out before the fuse blows. Then you'll have a used parts hunt plus a couple of hours to remove and refit. You can check a used motor with an ohmmeter across the gray (power) terminal and the housing (ground). Should be around 68 ohms for a functional motor. Oh, and if you have to replace the motor, make sure you check the tailgate central lock adjustment *before* you button things back up.

The tailgate wiper shaft is a chromed piece that spins in two bronze bushings. After fixing the broken tailgate wires, I discovered R's shaft was frozen in place. The motor was also burned out, presumably because of increasing resistance from the plain bearings in the shaft.

While searching out used replacements (new is many hundreds for the pair), I was able to persuade the old shaft out of its bearing tube after removing a circlip, washer, thin spacer, and o-ring securing the top of the shaft. The shaft had long ago lost its grease and worn away the chrome on the top (closest to wiper, where outside elements would sneak in over time) end, which led to corrosion of the shaft and seizing in the tube. I was able to clean it up with a scouring pad, grease it and get it working tolerably well again by hand.

The first replacement candidate was another burned out motor, perhaps due to the same cause. The second candidate was a functional pair. Sliding the wiper shaft out of its housing showed the very beginnings of chrome loss and corrosion in the same place as R's near the top of the shaft. I cleaned it up, greased the shaft with waterproof grease, and crossed my fingers. I wanted grease that would stay put and help keep water out, but I think I might have gone too thick. The shaft turns smoothly but feels kind of like it's spinning in maple syrup. Hopefully my choice doesn't burn out another motor.

    After having a seized front wiper on my 78 240 in 1985 I decided that's a job
    I did not want anymore, so from that point on I would put a drop of oil occasionally at rubber where shaft goes into body.Did this to my 240 fleet for
    next thirty years(Rear also) never did that repair again till my 2002 325(wagon)
    e46 bmw in 2012(one salty winter in my possetion forgot to oil as per volvo list). so I do it now on my beemers,it has a better seal but it eventually fails ,if oil is present it doesn't or it seeps and lubricates.SIMPLE!

    Every season, I lubricated and exercised the joints on the rear wiper arm and blade - the wiper leads a tough life back there.

    As for the brake light - does your car have anti-lock brakes?

    Are you sure the brakes are OK. On some Volvos, when one of the split systems fail, the switch in the system falls into a slot and may not reset itself. You should look into this for your car, as you may run into a situation with no brakes.

    Your profile does not mention where you live.

    You should test your anti-lock brakes on a slippery surface - ice, snow or sand.

    Test them with the light out and with it on.

    Some shops have a brake function test bed - they can tell how much stopping power is exerted by each wheel.

    Is the light out after you start the car?

    Our '90 754 TI would set the light about every 4 or 5 trips, when we hit a certain bump, the light always went out when the car was restarted.

    Update

    I'm unable to drain the oil, because the oil drain plug has a strange, two level plug, not close to the normal flat Volvo drain plug, and I almost stripped it with a wrench. Any idea how to get that off?

    It passed smog, but barely on 15mph NOx at 637 (max 689. avg 358). Everythine else was below average, esp 25 mph NOx at 22 (mat 511, avg 283). What do I need to do to lower that for the next smog test next June?

    ATF is brown/red; I drained 1.5 quarts and added synthetic

    There was no brake fluid in the brake reservoir. I added DOT4 and bled the brakes. One bleeder screw in right front top broke off, but does not leak. Intermittent brake failure light comes on, but no symptoms with brakes. Any thoughts?

    Besides the 1988, what 240 model years have tail lenses with six lights, the back up light being in the top center?

      At 300k plus, I guess we're into "irregular maintenance" territory. I bet if you did it once that'd be enough. All I can say (n=3) is that zero times is too few :)

      As an update the waterproof grease hasn't caused a problem. Rear wiper still works fine after the fix.

        How do I diagnose center line drive support problems?

        I'm having a bit of trouble visualizng that particular element. Can you give me link to that part in car?
