brake calipers - brain fart 900 1993

OK, I'm tired or having a middle aged moment - what size Torx do I need to remove the calipers on my 93 940? I'm changing rotors, so I can't just swing the calipers out of the way. I know I've done this before but I can't seem to find a big enough Torx in my toolbox. Did I use the wrong tool last time and just get lucky? Maybe I've never removed the whole caliper before since I've only had this car a year. Who knows. Anyway, I would appreciate knowing what you use so I can hunt it down or go buy it.

10mm Hex socket will do the trick. I bought a set of Craftsman in 3/8" drive for like $20. Real handy. Put them on a breaker bar so you can lay into it! :-)

I think the ABS sensors take the 5mm.

It's not a torx. Get out your metric allens

It looks like I'm in the market for a new tool - my allen wrench won't budge either of those bolts. I think I need an allen head with a 1/2" drive socket end.

Thanks for the quick posts, all.

Dear ronald,

Hope you're well. The caliper bolts are 10mm Hex Head, as I thought. I'd suggest saturating them with PB-Blaster, on each of several days before you try to remove them. PB blaster penetrates micro-channels in the corrosion, and weakens the corrosion "bond". Gentle tapping, with a hand-held hammer, might help.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

Thanks for the advice. I am wondering if an allen key has too much flex to loosen a really stuck bolt. I'm going to get myself a hex socket and use my breaker bar as the bolts seem to be really in there. I am applying a penetrating oil at intervals though.

While I haven't done this for the 7/9 caliper bolt yet, I did do it for the B20/m41 transmission. I took an allen key and inserted it in the bolt head and marked the depth. I then took that same allen key and stuck it in a 1/2" drive socket and measured the depth. I added both and cut the key at that length. I now have an "insert" that I can use a wrench or socket on. While it may not be as strong as a 1/2" drive purpose built hex key, I haven't managed to break it yet. I have a 3/8" drive 10mm hex head that works fine on the brake calipers...

Dear ronald,

Hope you're well. I respond now, in the event that time is of the essence. I think a 10mm hex key removes the caliper. I don't recall using any Torx bit on the brakes.

I'll need to pull the front driver's side (USA/CAN models) caliper on a '93 940 tomorrow a.m. I'll report the tools required, if different than I've stated.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook
