Temp compensator board bypassed...Temp still high 200 1991

Before the bypass of the TCB the temp varied between a needle's or so below the 9 o'clock mark to between that mark and the low end of the red section while driving along or in traffic. I've done the following before the bypass: New radiator, cooling system flush, new waterpump, new 87C thermostat and a full tuneup. The temp now will hover at a needle's width just above the 9 o'clock mark all the time. Why is it that high and what can I do to bring it down to or below the mark? It has 210K miles on it now and has been well treated.

Thanks for looking.

You don't leave much except maybe a fan clutch slipping.

Try turning it with a quick spin of the hand and see if has some resistance. Should not spin freely or coast very much.

You may have noticed in the past that when you start an engine that has been run, it should race with air flow, then hush down after for about 10 to 15 seconds of running time. The clutch fluid senses the radiant heat from the radiator not air temperature per say.

You should have the fan shroud on just in case you have left it off.

These gauges are not all that accurate, I don't worry about the position of the needle so much but look for consistent readings. As the engine warms up you should see the temp rise until the thermostat opens, then it will go down slightly and settle at the operating temperature.

Make sure the opening in the thermostat case is straight up to allow trapped air to escape.

    From easy to hard:

Look through this recent thread; especially Joe's post: a question about temp gauge after bypassing TCB

Check the +10v at the yellow wire, key on, wire disconnected from temp sender.

    Replace sender.

Verify temp isn't really high, using IR thermometer on the upper hose or tstat housing.

    Adjust (or replace) gauge.
