AW-71L Transmission Noisy in 1st Gear? 900 1993

I have a 1993 940 Wagon with 221K miles I bought this Spring at an auction. After considerable work, it really runs nice. The only thing that bothers me is the noisy 1st gear. I have done a complete transmission oil change and cleaned the pan, among other things. The transmission shifts with tight transitions but that 1st gear really whines. Could this be the rubber balls that are worn down in the transmission and mentioned in the FAQS? I tightened the shiftdown cable to the transmission and it made it a little quieter but it is still noisy and the shift point is a bit high in the upper gears and O.D. now in my opinion.

    AW-71L Transmission Noisy in 1st Gear? 900 1993

The high shift points are from a too-tight shiftdown cable. I wish I could tell you what the whine is, but I have an AW-70.
I don't think it is likely the shift balls in the valve body. (They're steel as far as I know). They would be doing things like keeping the car in second until you stop or giving you a delayed shift in one particular gear or something else related to shifting.
Does it make the whine if you put the gear selector in 1? There are different parts of the valve body being used, and therefore different balls, when you put the selector in 1 or 2 instead of D. If the noise disappears in 1 or 2, then it might be part of the valve body, if not then it's even less likely.

      AW-71L Transmission Noisy in 1st Gear? 900 1993

Thanks Will740turbo for the reply. I cannot hear any difference with the transmission starting out in 1 rather than D. The only difference in the whine is that is is less with a tighter shiftdown cable.

I didn't mention it before but the OD wiring was ripped out and the top of the solenoid destroyed when I got the car so it would not shift into OD so I replaced the solenoid and wiring when replacing the rear crank seal and front transmission seal. Also, I replaced the cracked plastic tank radiator with a used CSF metal radiator from a parts car. After a few hundred miles, the transmission fluid started changing color to a light green/red instead of pure red color. The radiator was leaking anti-freeze into the transmission oil throught the cooler so I replaced the radiator and flushed the whole transmission system again. I suppose the whine could have been from the anti-freeze in the system.

Please let me know if you or anyone else can think of anything else causing the whine. The transmission works great, it's just the whine that is a little annoying.

Thanks also to GT144 for the reply.

Is it really that loud? Both my 940s have a slight whine in 1st, but since I use mostly for highway driving, I've ignored the noise as my transmission works well otherwise.

Incidently, my 99 Ford Mustang and my 1988 Mercury Cougar (both auto) also had a slight whine when taking off in 1st.
