1986 Brake Line Nut size 200 1986

Hello BBer's,

1986 245DL, 286K and rolling along.

Have a brake fluid leak getting started on the left rear brake. Don't have a set a set of flare nut wrenches and want to get a set before starting the job.

Question is, what size do I need for the brake lines on an 86?

Don't want to purchase a set of metric and then figure out that they are SAE. Pretty sure it should be metric, however there is just enough of a mix of the two on the 86 to warrant asking.

Thanks in advance for your help and Regards,

Paul

They are brass and should have been made of stainless imo.
Often they are undersized, and round off when used.
A bit of pressure, and a gentle tapping on the end of the wrench has produced the best results for me.
Shimming an open end wrench with a bit of tin can is another trick.

    After 2 trips to the JY,and all that said;
I wouldn't try it again without a half dozen JY spares per 2 calipers.
    Good luck on your mission.

A bit of pressure, and a gentle tapping on the end of the wrench has produced the best results for me. Amen. Even in Sunny California I see.

Once the nut breaks loose from the caliper or flex hose, then the job is to free it from the copper/nickel line it surrounds. Carefully. Wiggling the line gently. See it start to move, squirt it. Feel the difference between moving and twisting inside the nut.

Each one seems to have it's own personality, they tell you right away if they want to come off without being destroyed by the vise grips. I truly believe that mechanics that don't like volvos dual diagonal system give them an extra bit of torque as a 'good bye/swan song' when working on the system.

Finding a 'factory fresh' unmolested system in the JY with fittings that aren't undersized [@ one in 20] is the trick.

Using a regular old open-end wrench, check the size of ALL fittings you may need to open, then check ALL the fittings on the new parts you want to install. Once you've got a nice little list, THEN go buy the exact sizes of flare wrenches you need.

7/16 is very close (.005") to the 11mm he needs. Testing with an open end 7/16 might make you think you had the right one. On a flare nut you really do want the right one -- and like Paul I mean Dan says, quality. But, once the nut is broken loose, the looser fit of the 7/16 open end makes the rest of the turning quicker.

        Art,

my point was more that he needs to check the fittings that are actually on his car, as they may well NOT be the same size as the ones on yours or mine. When I replaced flexible lines on my 245, the two rear ones actually used two different sizes for the same connection. One line was 16mm, the other was 14mm. Side by side! Both obviously quite old, and both were still faintly marked Volvo. And the new lines I installed were 15mm.

Yes, good point. The rear hoses are like that. 15 on one side and 16 on the other. The front hoses have to fit the recesses in the brackets, so they have to be 14 unless someone really messed Paul up in the past. It is always nice to find adjoining flare nuts are different sizes, and thankfully not the same two different sizes on your one wrench. -smile-
