245 rear wiper problem. 200 1989

Okay, I got the mother out:) Now, I have gotten this far on trouble-shooting but I am stuck. The wiper motor works as it should; powered it from the 12 volt supply on my bench. The white wire from the harness to the motor has it's required 12 volts no matter what position the switch on the wiper lever is set to. There is NO voltage on the black wire, no matter where the switch on the lever is set.

Where do I go from here? Do I need to (gasp!) take my steering wheel apart?! I miss my rear wiper!

Thanks.

D.

"Funny" you should have this issue-we did-we also have an '89 wagon. Yesterday my mechanic came over, fixed it in our driveway. He had a “new to me” harness which he used to replace the old one. He did pull down the headliner at the back corner and took off the things that cover the inside of the hatch. then he unbolted the hinge (we also used a broom to prop up that side of the hatch) from the bottom and there is another screw you have to get off from inside . look up in the hole you see a philips head bolt . Once that was out the hinge was loose. He then proceeded to pull through the old wires from the hatch-when it was showing at that hole he attached the "new" wires to the old and pulled it back on through. Stripped and attached the wires. easy. He did this at both ends. pushed back in the wires, replaced the headliner and-everything and voila-wipers work. Of course we tested it before we replaced the headliner etc. Be careful with the rubber gasket as when u begin to tighten down the hinge it can move around.
Forgot to mention-he did of course have to cut the old wiring. Then pulled it through-both ways-then spliced the "new" ones together

With the hatch closed, look into the top of the hinges and see if the wires are broken, if they are, that is most likely the problem.

Yep! I see it now. Darn! Wish I hadn't take the who thing apar. Oh well, that's how we learn.

Are there any detailed instructions for taking the hinge apart anywhere? I am going to try and splice it back together and recover the bundle with something. It also explains the blown fuses lately. The 12v severed wire touching the grounded hinge. Got me a project for next week:)

Thanks for your reply.

D.

Do not disassemble the hinges.

It is possible to thread a new harness through a hinge when the cargo door is open and the hinge is unhooked from either the car or the door (I forget which). Prop up the removed-hinge side with 2x4 or broom handle.

There is probably a post or FAQ to help with this job.

Come to think of it, I may have a pair of new harnesses in my garage. Bought years ago and then sold the car before installing them. New owner didn't want them.

Post back if you are interested.

Bob

245 rear wiper problem, new harnesses available, Tony.... 200 1989

Tony -

The harnesses I have are for the third-brake light models. I cannot be sure if the color coding is the same for 1986 forward, but surely they can be made to work for you.

The email here is for the wife. Sorry.

I'd like $25 for the pair including Priority Mail shipping. If you're OK with that, we can use your email for the rest of the needed info.

Thanks,

Bob

Hi again. I just saw your reply, today being Nov 12. Anyway, If i understand you correctly it should work for our 1989 wagon which does have the 3rd center brake light. (I believe ALL vehicles are required to have a 3rd light starting in 1986.) I am interested and the asking price is fine. Please do email me and we can arrange details. Once again: a_tony_usa@yahoo.com. Thank you.
