Just won't start all of a sudden.

Well, just when you think it is safe....My 1990 240 with 170,000 CAREFUL miles and really maintain just all of a sudden, won't start. I check for spark and it is getting it. I hear the fuel pump(s) and it turns over like a sewing machine, I just put in a huge Lexus battery, (barely fit in), but won't start. This is the area where I get numb. I can do the cosmetics and medium-level mechanics, but I am lost. I need "Superbrickman" (near Baltimore) or somewhere to give me sage and practical advice/guidance. Thanks for help.

    Sage advice??

OK, to start with (pardon the pun, it was really unintentional, but too funny to remove now) check your cam is turning. You can get spark without that. When an argument ensues, I just ask if you're getting spark at all plugs.

Pumps run or do you mean you hear the familiar bzzzt when first turning the key? Well, probably the pumps are running, but I would pull out the jumper wire from my glove box (or a paper clip) and bridge fuse 4 and 6 while attempting to start, just to be sure.

Third, assuming you're here because the first two paragraphs were useless, think what you might have knocked loose when wedging that Lexus battery into the corner. AMM plug? Pull it and see if it starts then? Accordion pipe? Still no idea? Pull a spark plug and see if it is getting wet. Pu

I forgot...yes only the humm and buzz not "running". Also, I stupidly after 3-4 times of trying, I floored the accelerator pedal and held it while trying. Maybe I flooded it now, ?

No you didn't flood it that way. That's just what I would have done, also, in case something had caused it to become flooded. When you step on it, you just let more air in.

Thanks Art. Well, I am thinking your idea of doing something when putting in the battery is maybe the best one. I am trying to remember what is near there that would be messed up. There is some wiring and the #25 fuse (which I checked) and I guess I will just go through it all and see.The agonizing thing is that had just completed the whole process of cleaning the throttle body, flame trap and air control valve. I don't know of one vacuum line that would single-handedly cause it not to start. Hmmmmmm. By the by, Art, "sage" advice is given usually with great wisdom and experience to back it up....hence, I asked you for sage advice, knowing what would be behind it. See?

Thanks, Art. I remembered last night when tying to start it that I had read recently to connect the left side of #4 and #6 but I only did that when not trying to start it. I did it and heard a hum and it sparked slightly. Good point about the battery. It was a bear to get in and I literally crushed my right hand trying to not drop it in. I will follow all of your points tonight and see. I do appreciate it. I actually removed my flex pipe and sealed off where it used to go into the heat box and also took out the thermostat as the car is garaged at work and home (when I drive it).
