blowing fuse #7 200 1990

I replaced the drivers side tail gate harness last night and the 3rd brake light was working along with the other two. Today I look and none are working. I found that fuse #7 is blowing when I press the brake pedal. I swapped out the bulb failure relay (big round red) and that didn't do anything. With this being a 1990 I can't figure out a way to access the brake light switch to try and jump it. What a joke that will be if its the problem.

I find it interesting that this happened the day after I replaced the tailgate harness. I unplugged the harness to the 3rd brake light and that didn't help. I looked at the tail lights and didn't find anything that would cause it to short out. Any ideas? If it is the brake light switch how do I go about getting at it. I already pulled the instrument cluster hoping to access it but couldn't see a way to it.

Trying to get this car some plates and I'm on my third and final temporary tag. I was getting so close to passing safety and now this.

Thanks

You've probably guessed by now this isn't the brake pedal switch, or the bulb failure sensor -- just a pinched wire somewhere aft of the spare tire. All I can really say is check your work. You'll find it.

Thanks for the help. Ya I had screwed down on part of the tailgate harness wire. I ended up taping it and moving it towards the center of the tail gate with a flat head while tightening the screw. At least it gave me a chance to remove the door chime relay.

Now to see if the firewall on the 83 is thick enough metal to weld. Pulled the clutch and brake pedal hoping it was the main problem but found the firewall has the actual hole. Both pedal and fire wall are cracked.

Thanks for the help. Definitely needing a drivable car to get back to work with. Ball Joints tomorrow and the AT fluid flush. One headlight to buff out/ reseal and I'll have the safety and emissions finally done.

      Thanks

Not sure what welding tools/machines you have at your disposal but my son took one of mine to his welding class last year and patched up a few things for me. He used a flux core TIG (or was it MIG) welder and it worked on even the thinnest body metal. I'm an old school guy (stick or gas)just learning about all the new welding tools available out there. I was amazed at what was possible. The welding instructor was very helpful and enjoyed having a real project for the kids to work on vs. welding one plate to another. Gave them a practical application for their nascent skills. You may want to check this option out if you do not have your own equipment. ---rick
