740T fuel pump noise 700

I purchased another 91 740 Turbo Satyrday, it runs great however the main fuel pump is making a loud buzzing, sounds almost like a power steering pump going out. (yes I have checked it is the pump) My question is after reading the "faq" it talks about this being caused by the in tank pump, before I replace that one I would like some input from smoeone with first hand knolage about this problem.

Remove gas cap with car running. Place ear as close to orifice as possible. You will definitely hear some fuel splashing back from the return line, you MAY hear a buzzing/humming noise from the intank pump. If you dont hear anything but the splash of gas returning the intank pump is dead. R/R.

And if you do change it out, change out the sock filter also. Look for a short piece of hose, replace it while you are there. Double check + - connections. Some after market are reversed.

Installed new pump, still have no sound from the in tank pump. Will check voltage with meter this evening. Main pump (under car) stll makes lots of noise, car runs great?! Very tired and confused at this point...Had to make a pull-a-part run to replace rusted pump mount assy.

Hello,

Yes, checking the voltage is the first step before replacing the pump. I’m sorry it didn’t work out.

okay, I have voltage to the plug for the pump, suspect ground problem, not sure at this point, (the ground shows good) guess I will pull the whole assembley again and check all the way to the pump.It looks like a small resistor at the treminal to the pump, could that be bad??

Hello,

Are you really sure the pump is not running? Power only the tank pump in a quiet place.

Sorry,

I didn’t mean to make you angry.

Check that the wires are intact through the tank plate with an ohm meter.

Not angey, just flustered.... However I pulled the pump last night and found the hot wire at the pump had broken, guess it got snaped when I was installing it.Used a spair from the old assembley and a butt connector, The fuel system is working properly now.
THANSK TO ALL FOR YOUR HELP. With three Volvos be sure I will be back.
