My wife drove my 92 245 today and said the AC started making a loud noise that scared her while she was driving. When I drove it I thought I was being attacked by a wild rabid turkey! Has any one else experienced this. it sounds like I'm pulling the leg off of a live wild turkey. I'm sorry, I have no other description for the noise. Fan motor?? How do I fix it?

Actually, I've never pulled the leg off of a live turkey--but I'm sure that's what it would sound like.

    Actually, it sounds like you're pulling our leg. (kidding) To me, it sounds like a frozen compressor....you know...seized up? Did you smell or see smoke? Like the belt trying to turn a stopped pulley? I drank some Wild Turkey once. Well, good luck.

    Check the belt tension from the crank to the AC compressor. Also try running the interior fan with the AC turned off, if it still squeals/shrieks then you are looking at a fan motor, especially if the noise is different on different speeds.

      The belt seemed to be ok. The noise, unbelievably loud, is on at all speeds. when Its on 5 it is loudest, then less loud on 4, Less on 3, more quiet on 2, there on 1 and still going when the system is off. It sounds like it would be the fan motor or the fan blades, but... could a vacuum leak in the AC area cause this noise? I'm not looking forward to taking my dash apart to fix it only to put it back together so I can order new parts.

        Does the pitch/frequency of the noise change when you switch fan speeds? Slower speed, lower frequency, higher speed, higher frequency. If it does, the fan is highly suspect.

          Yes, I have assumed it was the fan, either the blade wheel or the motor--but sometimes when I turn the blower switch off it the noise does not stop. I assume that the fan is still moving, but might it be some kind of vacuum leak moving air against some kind of plastic??? I would have expected the noise to cut off with the fan, or does the fan not stop???

            If I recall correctly, if the AC is turned on, the fan does not turn off in order to prevent freeze-up of the evaporator.
