'72 145 bumper polishing 140-160 1972

I've got the bumpers off the 145 for a few weeks while I work on the body piece by piece, and am wondering what can be done to refresh them. The rubber is obviously dried and cracking, best hope for that was just laying some rubber dinghy rejuvenator on it to see how much it can absorb.

But the metal - Has anyone ever polished the bumpers to shine them up a bit? Any tips?

    They are 7000 series alloy.
The pearl anodize on them is the best possible finish.
I just buff them with car wax,and call it a day.

7000 series! Knew they were subject to stress corrosion cracking.
Is there any cure for pitting? Obviously polishing the pits out will also remove
the anodize. I suppose if the surface is shiny enough around the pits they will not
      be as noticeable....

Yes, the 140's bumpers are aluminum. At least up to 71, they all seem to be. They should polish up well providing they aren't pitted from winter road salt. Salt will eat aluminum away eventually, you could wire wheel them with a soft brass wheel and a grinder or maybe a rough scotchbrite pad to get a brushed aluminum finish. Always looks good and you don't need a smooth straight bumper to pull it off.

          I know the bumpers are aluminum - I've had a 164 since 1971!
My point was, can you acid chrome an aluminum bumper?
I know you can chromic acid anodize it but it might be pretty expensive and would still
need to be polished first if it is pitted.

Ok... Someone needs a time out.

Maybe you should not have used a question mark in your 1st post, cause it sure looked like a question to me. As to my post it was directed to bmessina, seeing as he asked the question originally...
