122 with a Lexus 4.0L V8 120-130

I've always fantasized about a 122 with the 1UZFE Lexus 4.0L V8 in it, and recently stumbled upon this. I suppose it's more of a Lexus SC400 with a Volvo 122 body, but it's at least halfway what I've always pictured in my head.

He's in Abbotsford so you may see it in real life someday Barry. And for the doubters, the guy seems to have considerable experience in building vehicles that require custom fabrication work. From what I can tell, he's got most things figured out. Time will tell...

Hey thanks Dale. I'll have to look him up the next time I'm down Abbotsford way.

Cheers,

What an utter waste of time. He should have just driven the SC400.....

Yeah the idiot is only keeping the trunk lid, roof, front outer fenders, doors and nose and intends to register this and insure as a 66 Amazon. It's idiots like this that will make having old cars difficult. NC forces inspection of older than 35 years old exactly due to clowns like these.

Why do you think it is a waste of time?? How else can you get a great handling & performing car with 1960's style?

And the engine comes out the bottom....not the top like most cars.

Ever driven an SC400 Poopy? Amazing cars. Ever driven a totally stock, properly set-up 122S? Amazing cars. I see no need to mix them in some misguided Frankensteinian nightmare. Both are great as designed. Leave them that way.
As to whether such a thing is possible, well with enough time, money, and mental derangement, anything is possible. Whether it is worth doing is another matter, and in my opinion, for what it is worth, is that it is not.
Your opinion may vary.

Do have any idea how much time and money it would take to have saved that volvo? The amount of rust, the control arms were rusted through, most of the floor was gone, the rockers are toast. To do a restoration and find all those little parts again would have been very time consuming, and when complete it would still be 56 year old technology with no local parts availability, not to mention no 1uzfe.

Take that SC400, it was uninsurable due to a vehicle inspection requirement, it was beat to crap inside and out it stinks like old man, the motor smokes like a chainsaw, really a worthless car that would also be scrapped.

Take the best parts of both of them and now you have a modern hotrod that people on random message boards around the world are talking about...WIN.

Then title, register this as a 2012 Poopymobile or something akin to that...

He needs to put the Lexus body on the 122 chassis now; I'm not really sure why...he just needs to.
Wouldn't it be funny if he discovers he can't pull the motor on his frankenstein without cutting off part of the body.

If it comes to that, you can always take the motor out the way the factory put them in - unbolt the front crossmember and lift the body up and out of the way.

I have a LS400 Lexus and a 1990 240 that, honest to G-- is like new. So is the Lexus but I have long wondered if I could put the V-8 in the Volvo. The engine is the best V-8 ever produced, in my humble opinion, and I LOVE the Volvo 240 and its been garaged since new and serviced faithfully. How do you think it would be and require??

Apple

Certainly not a dirty word!! It is a respectful practice. It is a word not said lightly and always with proper consideration, See this link for a brief essay.

There are many gentiles who, like myself, try to live a life of righteousness according to Mosaic or Noachide law. To do so, we follow these practices.

There's a long history of putting V8's in Volvo's. The 240's engine bay (compared to the 140) seems to have been designed for a V8 - nice, deep, square. I'm always slightly surprised to see (for the Nth time) how neatly a domestic V8 sits in there, looks as though they take up less space in some ways than the Volvo motor does. I guess part of it is they had the room for all the stuff to be all over the place with the Volvo motor, and they had to pay attention to packaging on the V8's.

As for how easy a Lexus swap into a 240 would be - depends. Look at the oil pan on the Lexus V8. If it's in the right place, makes it a lot easier. Just make some custom motor mounts. Hopefully the transmission fits in the 240 tunnel (it fits the bulky AW70, so it's not terribly tight). Custom or modified driveshaft to go between the Lexus trans and the Volvo axle. Some plumbing and a lot of wiring under the hood. Often, the engine harnesses and ECU's are nicely separate from the rest of the car - and it's mostly just a matter of installing that and figuring out the smaller number of interfaces it needs to the car.

Always sounds fairly easy, but the devil is in the details, you often see cars with swaps '90% done' being sold for nothing, because they can't get the last little bits right and done.

I agree with you that the Lexus V-8 is the best ever made, and that's demonstrably true. Apparently the Aussies use the engines in hot-rods all the time, from wrecks I would think. The Lexus engine put paid to the crappy Rover-Buick 3.5 for sure.
Of course the fact that the Lexus V-8 is wrapped up in a Lexus car is what also adds to the experience. Absolutely wonderful cars.

Dude is a nut, and has lots of disposable income. You have got to be kidding me!!! You want to tear apart two perfect cars and start a project?

I ain't say'n I ain't a nut, but you have to admit that, other than destroying half (or more) of the mystic and fun of driving a brick, the V8 smooth responsive engine ( if it were a mere drop-in) in a 240 would be a hoot! Come on......cut me some slack Mr Goatman

122 with a Lexus 4.0L V8 = Stupid 120-130

I think the guy would added a twin turbo V8 to a "Complete" 122 did a better job then this pile of whatever. Go on youtube and you will see his great job.
