1993 Volvo 940: Transmission Selector Lever- Gear Lighting

I have a 1993 Volvo 940 wagon. Recently during one evening, when moving the auto-transmission selector lever from P to Drive, I noted that each gear became lighted, i.e., P, R, N and D. Instead of the selected gear being lighted, all gears that were passed remained lighted simultaneously. Any thoughts on the root cause?

There is a sliding plastic mask which is broken. Fairly common with the late style shifter.
