Check Engine Light S90-V90

I have read the code, p0442, and I am aware that it means a leak in the emissions evaporative system, most likely a loose or defective gas cap.

I also understand that I can erase the code with my reader after fixing it.

My question is on this car, will that code reset itself and turn the light off eventually when the problem is fixed? How else would I know if I solved the problem other than resetting it and seeing if it comes on again?

If the battery is disconnected for a while, 30 minutes or so, the next restart will not have the CEL illuminated. Note that you will need the radio code and the station presets.

Then the computers wait until a certain set of driving things are done - certain miles and certain gears and speeds - to "re-set" the system. At that time it will "look for" problems and light the CEL if one is found.

Check hoses around the charcoal cannister and around the fuel filler tube area.

I understand that one hose from the charcoal canister is open to the atmosphere and can be a attractive place for an insect to nest. I've never found that open end, but the info source is credible. Note that the canister on the 1998 S-V/90 models can be under the front passenger's feet rather than below the windshield washer fluid reservoir.

    Good Luck,

    Bob

    Hello,

I can usually smell evap leaks. If your car smells at all like gas after driving it in warm temperatures, then you have a problem.

If the leak is the gas cap, then the lamp will never come back on.

Okay thanks, so I will erase the code, tighten the cap and keep my fingers crossed, yes?
You see, my wife has severe arthritis in her thumbs and doesn't turn it to hear the clicks. Although she now tells me that she has been doing this for quite a while, as soon as the light went on, I assumed that it was this.

I am making her a tool to help her with tightening and removing for the future.
