Transmission noise 140-160

Today, I pulled the M41 from my 142 to inspect if I had any bearing problems such as the throw-out bearing, pilot bearing or the input bearing for the tranny. I had prepared myself to use the wet tissue application to get the pilot bearing out. Stuck my finger in there to twist the inner race and was able to pull the pilot bearing out on my finger like little Jack Horner pulling out a plum from a Christmas pie.

I suspect this was causing the noise, but what say ye?

On another note, the rear main seal was in rather good shape. It is a felt seal that had copious amounts of sealant applied to any surface that might leak oil. I'll replace the housing with an updated unit. Do I remember correctly that the new rubber unit needs to be soaked in oil for an hour or so?

TIA,

Jack

I agree with Rhys. And Throwout bearings are always more suspect than pilot bearings.
DO NOT forget to put the wire ring in there to hold the pilot bearing it! I forgot it once
and ended up having to get a new nose for my tranny! (I pulled the tranny and pulled it out.
Since I didn't pull the clutch I didn't know it was out.)

BTW I have updated housings. If interested e-mail me offline.

As long as the bearing itself is turning smoothly ( holding the inner and outer and spinning it) then the fact that it was not a friction fit in the crank counterbore means nothing. It wasn't making the noise.
Is the noise dependant on road speed, engine speed, or selected gear? Output shaft bearings fail often in these transmissions.

Well it's interesting that you mention the output shaft. There seems to be a significant leak between the main trans housing and the OD unit.

As for the noise, it occurred through all the gears.

The pilot bearing did turn smoothly too.

I had picked up pilot and a throw-out bearings. Think I'll change these out. As for the transmission, I'll clean it off and see if anything looks obviously wrong. I think there was a write-up on here recently where a gasket set was being installed, especially between the OD and tranny.

As for the rear main seal George, I may have one, but if not, I'll send off a message. Thanks for the offer.

      Thanks for the input.

Have you drained the trans of fluid? If not, do - the magnet may be covered in steel "fines" and perhaps a chunk or two. If so you'll know what to do, which is strip and rebuild the trans. Bearings are cheap, but it's best to keep the bits from moving around the trans and taking out other components.
