122 air filter 120-130

Anybody got like this (part number 73606):

Photobucket

I have one (need two), and would like to gut it and install a generic filter. Would like to find one with the Volvo logo like the one above.

Paul

I needed new filters for my (new to me ) SU carbs, I had a Weber, worked fine but not great and wanted to go back to SU's and a mechanic friend of mine had a pair of SU's and manifold and gave them to me, he had them on a shelf for over 20 years, he told me that they came off of a 122 that was converted to FI. . . He told me that changing gaskets etc. that they should be fine , they were not worn out. .
Well I put them on the motor and they started working great with No filters, I tweaked here and there and an engineer/amateur drag racer neighbor came over (it's great to have these kind of neighbors) he did great tweaking and they work like a charm!!!! The Filters were SHOT, bad, very bad, clogged and OLD!!!

I told the neighbor that I'm happy about the SU's but I will have to bite the bullet and get some new filters w/shipping an easy 50 bucks a pair,, he looked at the filters and asked me if it was okay to saw them in half, go ahead, who cares for these old pieces of crap!!! He takes them apart and winds up with the two metal plates of the filter and looks at them and looks and looks with huge concentration.

Well, this guy used to have a 65 Pontiac GTO that had three two barrel carbs and he swore that the filters were sort of this size and could fit between the two old metal plates, he calls a buddy he has that is a manager in Carquest and off we go,, well,, Carquest Filter Number CFI 87032 (for the Pontiac GTO) is about over all a couple of millimeters narrower in diameter and wider, I scraped with a wire brush the old glue on the insides of the plates put the two outer metal plates with the new filter together with a bead of silicone on each side, there is a metal tube where the mounting bolts go through, the neighbor (I'm a lucky bastard) had a bunch of all kinds of tubes and even though he thought it wasn't really necessary he cut me the four ity bit longer NEW tubes that I put together with the plates and filter and they work great!!! everything for less than 14 bucks!!!

I'm happy and the car runs great the Weber was OK, but with these I already notice a good increase in the MPG...

    saludos, gv

I got them off eBay for $12 shipped (tight fit):

      http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140468412010&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

Cross-reference with these numbers (based off of other threads here on BB):

      WIX filter number is: 46641

      Kohler #4508302

I made spacers using tube aluminum since these filters are wider (3").

    Came out looking pretty good.

I got one more, and I painted them with some brake caliper paint I had laying around.

I cooked off the glue with a little lighter fluid and a torch. I heard that a heat gun works too. A little carb cleaner removes the remaining glue on the front and rear plate.

Very stylish Paul. If I was still using my 3 bolt carbs, I would be looking to do something similar. However my HIF6's have an air box - boring.

      Cheers,

    Paul,

If nobody here comes up with one, let me know. I think I know where I can find a set, but it may be a couple of weeks before I get a chance to get out to where they are.

from what i have seen you can't replace the filaments, if you "gut" it it will no longer be usable. However "www.vlvworld.com" has replacement pairs for about $80.00 US plus shipping of course. And "www.ipdusa.com" has a nice looking aftermarket set by K&M with chromed top and bottom plate for $75.00 plus shipping.
I have thought about using a "generic" filter that fit the circular size and cutting both top and bottom places out of a clear urethane sheet so you could see the action of the dashpots duringtune-up without taking the filters off. but time and funds holds me back.

Yes you can. All it takes is some Kohler filter elements, tubes for spacers, and longer bolts. Here is the evidence:
