'59 445 fuel tank capacity - really only 4 gals.? 444-544

Hello Gents,
I need to frequently fuel my '59 445. Today I took a look at an old owners manual from around that time period & I noticed the following description for fuel tank capacity:
9/4US gals.
I take it this means 9 liters or 4 US gallons?
Since 1 US gallon = 3.78541178 liters that would come to 2.735(since 9/3.78541178 is really 2.375?)
Anyway, is the fuel tank capacity of my '59 445 really only 4 gallons??
Thanks in advance for any/all advice.
Regards,
Jim

When I first drove my 544, the gas gauge was flaky.

I got a nice, heavy spare tire gas can that holds almost 2 gallons.

Because it is as heavy as a jerry can, it is sealed and has no vent. It also has a nozzle.

This sort of can can be seen on ebay at times, listed as a BMW part. Unfortunately it brings BMW prices most of the time!

    I got mine cheap.

BTW - I ran my car out of gas on purpose, dumped the gas in and had no trouble starting it. I now know just how my new sender works

The 444 and 544 held about 9 gallons so I would suspect that it would be about the same.
Carry a gas can with a gallon of gas, run it out, put in the gallon and then fill it at
the nearest station. That should give you a pretty good idea.
(I did this on almost a daily basis when I was commuting to Tulsa in 544s in 67-68.)

Thanks for your reply. 9 gals. sounds a lot more reasonable than 4 gals!
It's just the, "9/4US gals." reference in an old owners manual threw me. I'm going to assume it's 9 gals., unless someone else here corrects me.
      Thank so much!
      Regards,
      Jim

I'd recommend carrying a small gas can with you. 9 gallons ain't much!!
This will also give you a chance to check the volume.
I got good enough that when I ran out of gas at a red light I could have the can of gas
in the tank and the car going when the light turned green.

9.5 US gallons based on this spec sheet:

          Photobucket

This might give you a better look at it:
