Broken Ignition Cylidner 140-160

I know someone who's roomate managed to break the ignition key in the cylinder. Much smashing insued.

He at the very least eneds a new ignition cylinder assembly. I have a couple. Is it easier to swap the whole steering column with those damned headless bolts, or try and just replace the ignition assembly?

Any tips, tricks?

Thanks!

Andrew

The 'security' bolts aren't that tight.
I have been successful with 3 different methods.

Tapping them around with a center punch.
Drilling 2 small holes and using a pin tool.
Drill a 3/16" hole and use an east out.
Slotting them with a hacksaw once they are out allows them to be reused.

The problem is that the locks are steel and pot metal so after 20 years or more they need some oil.
CLP break free or TRI flow are best.

    Good luck.

Take your dremel tool with #409 cutoff disks and cut a screwdriver slot in each bolt.
Make sure it is wide enough for a sturdy screwdriver (1/16" or more).
Take the screwdriver and unscrew them out.
What I ended up doing was taking the lock cylinder out and taking all the tumblers and springs
out of it and putting it back together. Nothing to catch in the crack!

So you replaced the cylidner out of the assembly, not the column?

I thought I heard working with the ignition assembly was a real chore.

        You could say that.
        So is walking.

          hard to argue with that!

I was just trying to figure out if it was easier to replace the crap on the column or the entire column ;)

If your column has crap on it you should clean it first!
It is MUCH easier to replace or repair the switch than to replace the whole column.
