Gates - Thermoplastic Clamp 900

Has anyone had experience with the Gates - Thermoplastic Clamp? It sound interesting but I don't want to find out they don't work after installing a new radiator and hoses. Any other suggestions for hose clamps?

Thanks

    Gates - Thermoplastic Clamp 900

    Dear DrPettit,

Hope you're well. Gates products are sound. But there's no reason to experiment with rad hose clamps. Simple as they are, they are mission-critical. If a clamp fails and a hose comes loose, coolant loss is rapid, followed by damage to the water pump (if engine shut-down isn't prompt), and a blown head gasket.

I'd use Volvo clamps: the teeth are not cut through the strap, so there's a smooth surface against the rubber. If Volvo clamps aren't handy, then standard stainless steel (with teeth cut through the strap) screw-operated hose clamps work well.

Equally, I'd use Volvo brand hoses. The extra cost buys a lot of "peace of mind".

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    Spook

I never did like the way regular hose clamps can have those sharp edges and have been tempted myself to try to find alternatives. But spook is right...Too critical. I started installing hoses and then wrapping the ends where the clamps fit with 2 layers of electrical tape and then fitting a regular clamp.
