It is almost like trading Volvo 240s....unbeleiveable! 200

After reading a few threads recently and their replies, I went home and cleaned my throttle body, replaced all vacuum lines, cleaned the air control, etc. and then took a midnight ride ( felt a little like Paul Revere because I wanted to let everyone know something) and could not beleive my foot and backrest!! It literally felt like a much more powerful engine than it has for YEARS. I can't beleive it. If anyone has not done this stuff recently and wants more "OOOMPH", just do what I did. I re-read all the threads before I did the things and followed everyone's well-worded instructions and all I can say is "thank you all once again for being there and sharing your experience/expertise." Unreal. God, I'm tired from the excitement of writing all this. I think I am going to take a nap in the big, comfortable backseat of my 240.

"air control" - idle control valve or airbox? One thing I didn't read was the air box thermostat. If its stuck on the hot then your going to burn up that AMM. Also I've noticed the engine breathes better and accelerates better at freeway speeds if you rig that airbox thermostat to cold. If its stuck on hot then find a AMM back up asap.

I'm sorry, "air control Valve" and yes, I disabled (referred to today in seperate thread) the heat box and took out the thermostat and permanently sealed the entry for the flex hose. But thanks for pointing that out anyway. I am sure you were right about the consequences, but thanks to previous BB threads, I be learning........some. thanks

Yes I need to do so as well!
How poorly was your car running? Mine runs fairly well, a bit noisy, but I'd love to have the same experience as you did!

Did you have a list/diagrams for the vac hoses? I'd change mine out if I could do a checklist approach rather than leaving one out...
Yeah Volvo!

Koos, I did it like I do my spark plug wires after learning the hard way. I take one off, replace it. Take another off, replace it, and so on. My car was idling poorly and running like it had the hand brake on about 1/4. I sent to IPD for their kit to do the AMM even though it looks good to the naked eye, I am sure there is little "stuff" there. I sell Mercedes cars and if you run your hand over the waxed surface of a delivery, it feels like a baby's butt. Put your hand in any plastic bag, rub it again. It feels like sand paper. Now, clay bar it ( brand new, mind you) and with your hand back in a plastic bag, rub it over again and it is slick as greased boogies. THEN, apply DuPont's sealer (only one endorsed by Benz) and rub again and you won't beleive it. The point of all this is I beleive that there HAS to be microscopic stuff onl the platinum wire inside the AMM, so I am going to clean it too although I doubt if I will see any better performance because right now, knock on wood, it is like a dream.

AMM hot wire 200

"The point of all this is I beleive that there HAS to be microscopic stuff on the platinum wire inside the AMM,"

There may be something on the inlet screen (which can be brushed off), but at shutdown after any run where the RPM has reached 3,000 rpms, the wire gets 1 minute at 1,000° C.

IMO, if AMMs needed some kind of "cleaner", Bosch and Volvo would have been the first to know back in the early eighties.

There may well be stuff on the wire, but I believe that, from time to time, the system briefly raises the wire to a high temperature, precisely in order to burn off anything sticking to it. How the system know when to do that, I don't remember.

But tht might not matter, per this FAQ answer:

Thank you both. I think I will relax and concern myself with something else.
What you said makes alot of sense. Thanks again.

Another reason not to clean it - it's very easy to break the wire. It's slightly stronger than a lightbulb filament. Only slightly.
