mystery squealing noise. 200

All, I hope you can give me some advice. I have a 1989 Volvo 240 that just started making a mystery squeal a couple of days ago. I know one of the alternator belts had broke so I took the car in and had all the belts changed. I piked up my car, didn't hear any noise so I thought it was good to go. I got a mile down the road, the car was now warmed up and the squealing starts. It only does it when I hit the gas. I can also put the car in neutral and rev up the engine and I get the squeaking as well. I thought the exhaust heat shield might be vibrating so I took it off and it still squeals. I also painted a line on the harmonic balancer to check that and took the car out for a long test drive. Line hasn't moved a bit so the balancer is good. Any ideas? It almost sounds like a belt squeal but the belts are brand new. I know the accessory bushings are pretty old and falling apart. You think this might be the problem?

Figured out the noise finally. Went downtown today to look for the accessory bushings and I called up 10 or 15 stores, not one had any. I decided to take one last look and guess what, the front exhaust hanger is the culprit. I wedged a screwdriver between the pipe and mount and no more squeal. The mount is pretty rusty so I couldn't tighten the bolt, I'll have to take it somewhere to get welded. Here is more to the story, originally I thought it might be the exhaust because the squeal seemed to diminish when I wedged my foot on it while reving the motor. I took it to the firestone place which is right next to my work thinking they could take care of it since I was really busy. I let them know I thought it might be the exhaust but I also knew the belts were kind of old. They looked at it and told me nothing was wrong at all with the exhaust and that it was the belts. i though fine, easy fix. I let them change the belts, which was a big mistake. I went to go pick up my car and upon moving the car, the upper radiator neck where the upper hose goes to comes off and antifreeze goes everywhere. Since the radiator was 21 years old but was fine up until that point, who knows. My suspicion is the firestone guy busted the hose mount while changing the belts. Since I couldn't prove anything since the radiator was old, I ended up buying a radiator on the side. Got the radiator in and on the way home, there is the squeal. Screw Firestone! I looked up on brickboard here and checked out the harmonic balancer, good to go, no problems there. The accessory bushings looked pretty crappy so I just ordered them from IPD. Something was still bothering me though so I thought I would check out the exhaust one more time. This time I had my wife's assistance, she revved up the motor while i poked around with a screwdriver, eureka! Just an exhaust mount that needs some attention. Mystery solved. Just learned a lesson the hard way, not to mention there isn't any descent mechanics to be found anywhere near where I live. Thank you all for getting me to where I needed to go to solve this problem!

You stated that your accessory bushings are shot and falling apart, that means that the pulleys are out of alignment in relation to one another. The end result is that the belts squeal as they bend to "conform" to the out of alignment pulleys. Bushing replacement is most likely the solution.

Unless, of course the shop installed Dayco Poly-cog belts, they'll squeal if you look at them funny with the engine not running!

The alternator bearings can make a squeal, and I've had a water pump or two do that as well. Sounds like a belt, but isn't.
The chances of a dampener making a squeal - well within a few seconds there would be a big bang as the hub destroyed a few things under the hood....
The timing belt tensioner is also a known culprit.

It may be that the rubber in the two piece harmonic balancer has failed and the outer ring is slipping. Mark across the two pieces with some paint or chalk, then run the engine and make it squeal. Shut the engine off, if the mark you made on the balancer has separated you need a new one.

I painted a line on it and drove it for a few miles, all the while I could hear it squealing, line didn't move at all.

Then you need to look at the belts or the alternator and water pump bearings. Can you get it to squeal by reving the engine when stopped?
