Interior lights on rear doors 900 1993

I've had a '93 940 since last month and I'm slowly going through it and fixing problems.

One that I can not seem to figure out is that the rear doors will not turn on the interior lights, the front doors turn them on though.

I have checked the switches and they are OK. I measure ~8V on the contacts to the drivers (L) side switch. Shorting the contacts does not cause the lights to turn on.

Anyone have any ideas? The wires appear to go up the B pillar, are they connected up top?

I'm not sure if this is related, but the Volvo Guard (I?) alarm system seems quite a mess. The module on the A pillar was all torn apart, and not even connected. It does not affect the operation of the car though.

    The switches in the door pillars are notorious for corrosion and failure. Remove the switch, disassemble it, clean off the contacts, and replace. See the FAQ.

      That was the first thing I checked. The switches are good. Something is wrong with the wiring somewhere else.

        Double-check your voltages on BOTH sides of the switch. Make sure that 8V reading isn't a result of corroded switch contacts as Steve mentions.

        That said, if memory serves, the switches ARE part of the alarm system and it being torn up may very well have something to do with your problem. I do not know enough about the alarm system to be of help but would suggest trying to find the tech manual for it or starting in the FAQ's here.
