Overflowing gas tank... 444-544

Hello Gentlemen,
Every time I fill up the gas tank on my '59 445 the gas leaks under the car, near the fill point. I crawled under the car to see what the problem is. I wonder if its not the hose clamped to the metal fueling point or where this hose clamps to the metal line leading to the gas tank - it's definitely in that area because as soon as I drive a bit and use some gas it no longer leaks.
Any thoughts as to what the problem might be?
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Jim

Have you tried tightening the hose clamps?

      Thanks for your quick reply!
Actually, I did.It didn't seem to clamp down any harder. But, I haven't filled the tank since so maybe the problem is fixed.
A mechanic friend said something about possibly a clogged air hole, but I don't know what he is talking about - is there a hole on the line to the gas tank? I can't imagine that.

        Hello,

If your 445 has a fuel filler hose that has a molded 90° bend, you also have a vent hose that runs from the top of the tank to the filler neck.

You might have to pull the interior panel next to the rear passenger bench seat to access the vent hose connection at the filler neck.

I do have a molded filler hose. I'll pull the interior panel & see if there is vent hose tere.
          Thanks Eric.

There should be a vent somewhere so that
        a. when gas goes out air can come in to replace it, and
        b. when gas expands, air can escape so you don't build up pressure in your tank.

Also when rubber is exposed to gasoline, it swells. When it dries out it shrinks.
So if your gas tank is so low that there is no gas in contact with the hose for a long time,
the rubber may shrink and the hose clamp will not be tight enough.
This could especially be true if it is months and not just a few days.

I'll look again for that overflow vent...
          Thanks!

It may be a small hole in the inside of the gas cap.

Ah. So if that's the case it's not a clogged vent causing the leak. I'll check the cap.
Thanks for all your kind advice!
              Regards,
              Jim

The 445 parts lists the following. "Rubber hose for air drain pipe" Unfortunately there are no pictures of this or the tank. It probably connects to a stub at the top of the fixed pipe that comes out to the filler. I guess the stub would be just below the lower end of the hose. Should be visible from under the car. The later P210 tank has an extra metal pipe from the top of the tank out to this position as an alternative breather which also helps to brace the filler pipe.

You might also have a case of fuel expanding in the tank and overflowing out the filler neck or somewhere else. Gasoline is not what it used to be...

Also be aware that nozzles for dispensing unleaded fuel typically don't shut off when they should, so it's possible to overfill the tank on older cars.

My 122 and 220 both suffer the sort of problem you describe if I fill the tank and leave the cars sit on a sunny day with a temperature higher than 50 degrees.

                      Hello Bill,
                      Thanks for your post.
My leak is not due to expansion - the leak occurs immediately upon filling.
I also fill the car myself so I put the gas in s-l-o-w-l-y to prevent over-filling.

I'm confident that thanks to all the suggestions you guys were kind enough to post that I will find the cause of the problem.

                      Thanks to all!

                      Regards,
                      Jim
