Engine Bay Paint Restoration 140-160

Wanting to repaint part of the engine bay on my 1969 144s before installing the engine. Need to repair surface rust on and below the battery tray.

How is this tray attached to the fender because I'd like to remove it for complete access? Seems loose toward the front where the hold down bolt goes, but is it welded onto the fender along the long edge there? I don't see any spot welds. Is it stitched all along?

I remember a couple of spot welds on the battery tray on my '72 but I don't remember the exact location.
It did seem kind of strange that it was welded in.

I just went out to check my '69 parts car. Found one bolt facing down--center along length closest to radiator (not the ground strap bolt-but next to it). I was thinking I'd find three screws--two from underneath but that wasn't the case--although my car is totally rusted under there. -- Dave

Further research--looked at the Volvo From Heck (also '69 but without the rust) and could only find the one screw I described in the last note. Looks like the fender apron side is welded. -- Dave

Welded, yeah. That's what I figure. Only I don't even see any spot welds, but, today, while repairing mt '03 Avalon, i have learned they're not always easy to see.

Really want to put this engine and transmission back in, fix a rust hole on the rear wheel arch and go get it inspected so I can drive it some....but I just can't leave this battery rust alone since I have the engine out.

Would love to rebuild the wiring harness, too, while I have access, but.....

I have another race in 2 weeks, and a zillion of chores around the house, then another event (Summit Point/EMRA?) in November.

And body damage to fix on the #36 Escort.

          It's not easy being me.

Harbor Freight sells a small spot sandblaster with several rubber tip adapters for something like $10. It should be small enough to get in that area to clean things up without unwelding the battery tray.

            Good luck
            Bob
