Brake drum puller 122. 444-544

I found a thread from Livelarge dated Aug 2nd 2008, describing how to adapt a rental Axle Puller Kit to remove 122 rear brake drums.
Does anyone know if this works on 544 drums, and if the 4.5 - 5.5 adapters referred to are part of the puller kit? My guys at Advance Auto have no idea.

Thanks for all the hints and suggestions. I found that Advance Auto has more than one puller to loan. I got the #40 Powerbuilt Master Hub Puller set, {about $90.00 on your credit card, refundable in full when returned} It worked great.
I did find one drum extremely tight, and using a breaker bar and socket tightened to the limit, I finally resorted to popping the hub center boss around the outside with a copper drift and heavy hammer. This jarred it loose.

Here's about as cheap as it comes: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190441234646&viewitem=

This is the type I had before going to a heavy duty one like John pointed out. Doesn't work as will, but does work.

This doesn't answer your question but will make things easy as pie once you get a puller, someone on here told me about it once and it was a lifesaver.

The easiest way to use a puller once you have a good propper one, is to tighten the lug nuts half way. Then tighten the main screw of the puller as tight as you can against the axle end. Now with a lug wrench, breaker bar, impact wrench, start tightening the lug nuts one by one till the drum pops off. I never get past the third lug, no beating with a hammer, no cursing or swearing for two days. Easy as changing a tire IMHO, but you need a proper puller.

All I can say is that the rear druns on a 544 are the same thing as the rear drums on a 122. Same bolt pattern (5X4.5), same single huge nut, same hard to remove tapered axle shaft interference fit on the drum, same need for a puller that looks like it should be used on trains or semis.

The puller I have has swinging arms and can bolt to a pretty wide range of bolt patterns.

Soak it with PBLaster or similar once a day for a few days prior to trying to pull it.

Get a puller that allows you to pound on it with a hammer. Use a heavy hammer to tighten it. Good luck, they can be horrible sometimes.

I found mine for not too bad of a price on eBay, mil surplus. Looks pretty much like this:

I got mine on Ebay as well, for around $50 I think. Worked great. Took maybe 5 minutes per side. Came in a nice blow-molded storage case. The forcing screw is reallllly beefy and has a nice large hex on the end for a ~1.25" impact socket before switching to the hammer and anvil.
