14" GT wheels, center hubs 200 1990

Hello all,

I am a Volvo newbie. My wife and I purchased a 240DL in 1990 for my MIL and we got that car back four years ago in great shape. All three kids drove it through high school, the last being my son, who is now in his first year of West Point. He loves the car and it needs to be "refurbished", which I am in the middle of doing as a surprise for him. My question is this: I found a set of reconditioned 240 GT wheels (14") which I am told will go right on this DL. Assuming that is true (these are Volvo 283075 with the black "V" center caps that were an option on the European 242/262 I am told), any chance of all of finding orginal center caps, and if not, are there currently available center caps that will fit? The seller states that center caps off the 15" Virgo wheel fit correctly. These are next to impossible to find.
Any help? Will these wheels even fit?
Thanks,
Andy

    Hi Andy,
It's Phil, I sold you the rims. Remember that they are NOT GT rims but an accessory rim from 1975 (before GTs). I wish I could help more with the center caps. the inside diameter is 2 1/8 " not sure of the mms.
They will definately fit your son's 240. They are going out today UPS should be there tomorrow or friday. I will have a tracking number for you later today.

I once used an 850 center cap on a set of the IPD Penta-sports that were a close fit, had to file the OD down a little, but worked fine. The cap size was a bit odd, and couldn't find an exact fit cap. IIRC the 850 cap was about 54 mm and the Pentasport was 52 mm. They may not be the orig 'V' but have Volvo spelled across the center, and looked good.

The Virgo centercaps will not fit. Been there. Tried that. They are close but not quite. If memory serves correctly, the Virgo centercaps are slightly too small and rattle around (and fall out). I've got a Virgo wheel and both styles of centercaps so could see which way it swings.

Dave Barton sells many different stickers, a few of which might work on the original GT centercaps...

Thanks for that. I am not critically interested in original caps, but really just wanting to find a Volvo center cap that will stay put in these. Phil is right - these aee not strictly speaking GTs (not that that would make this quest any easier...), but there must be a Volvo center cap that will work, no?

Perhaps a picture of what wheels you have will allow us to more accurately answer your question. Volvo made dozens of different wheels and didn't seem to stay consistent with the centercap sizing...

          Of course.
These are, despite what Phil tells me and to the best of my researching ability, actual GT wheels. They are 5.5 x 14 and have a center opening that is 2.125" (54mm). Volvo part number 283075.
I believe only a miracle would have me locating original center caps and it doesn't appear that anything that is currently available will fit, so I am probably looking a plain generic cap. As a complete neophyte I have to ask: if the center opening has a diamter of 54mm, do I use center caps exactly at 54mm or a bit smaller? I assume these pop on after the wheel is mounted, yes?
          Thanks,
          Andy

Those are the same rims on a 1978 Golden Anniversary issue 264GL I bought years ago (cheap)--to get the rims (I like them--currently on my '80 245). I got the V6 running and sold the car with the more common GL 25 spoke rims installed. One of the things I like about these 5-spoke rims is their VERY light weight--too bad they're only 5.5" wide. I haven't ever had the center caps on the rims--and think there was not a full complement of them when I bought the 264. I'll look through my "center cap box" and see if I can identify what belongs there. I think your confusion over calling them GT rims stems from their having the same sort of mid-sixties Italian sports car rim look that the GT rims also have. -- Dave
