Cig lighter fuse blowing out - Hints? Tips? 900

Hi all,

1996 960 wagon.
Looking for any leads on doing this hunt for a short in my cigarette lighter circuit.
I replace the fuse and it will short out after a few minutes. The car is new to me so I do not have any history on it but I am not terribly surprised because it was not very well taken care of in general either inside or out. Normally I would not care but I need to use it for my GPS.
I do not have the car with me right now and I cannot recall what else is on that fuse but my only idea right now on where to start looking is by pulling out the lighter receptacle and examining that for problems. Anyone other likely suspects I should check out?

Thanks very much,
Jim Lee

    Dear Jim Lee,

Hope you're well. Fuse 10 also controls "beam width control", which I presume refers to headlights. As "beam width control" is not present on 940s, I do not know the particulars.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    Spook

Before you put the key in the car, check the bottom of the lighter for any foreign objects. If you have a rear lighter, check that one also, they will be on the same circuit.

I believe there is a short in the lighter itself. This is lame but can anyone tell me the correct way to remove lighter without damaging the dashboard? I can kind of sort of get a grip with needle nose pliers but do not want to force it out. I vaguely recall getting other lighters out by rotating them counter clockwise but this one does not seem to be into turning.

I can replace the fuse and it will have power for a the first time I test it but as soon as I actually plug something in it blows. I have a strong feeling there are wires touching immediately behind the lighter so I need to get it out. It looks fine as far as what I can see inside right now with it installed.

      Thanks very much,
      Jim Lee

I am trying to recall my 780 days, which had the same set up. The cigarette lighter has a ring nut in the back holding the lighter to the plate. My car had a screw holding the plate in?

Remove the ashtray and start looking with a flashlight.

The beam width adjustment is for european headlights only, they have motorized headlights allowing for beam adjustment from the driver's seat.
