it started with a bad horn, which my sister eventually traced to the contacts in the steering wheel. She had the horn pad (which contains the airbag) off and was cleaning the horn contacts, when the airbag came loose from the cable. She plugged it back in (or thought she did), and when she got everything back together, I had a working horn, but now the SRS light is on and will not go off.

I would suggest that something is amiss in either the lead to the airbag or perhaps the clockwork mechanism was disturbed while fixing the horn. If at any time she turned on the ignition (to check the horn perhaps) while the airbag was disconnected, then the system ECU stored a fault which will have to be cleared. There is a port in the middle of the center dash console with a little cover that says SRS on it. There is a routine to follow to clear the fault codes and turn off the light--as long as everything is connected properly. I suggest you search the board for SRS Reset, or message me and I can send you a document with the instructions.

Thanks to the doc you emailed me, we were able to read the code today and my sister was able to fix it. She checked for codes again and there were none. She tried to clear the codes but couldn't get the rhythm. So I may try the negative battery deal. Or not. I haven't decided yet.

Bet it was the clock spring that was thrown out of wack. Same sort of thing happened to my 1990 when someone tried to true the steering wheel after some steering work. Definitely check the connections first, then try David's instructions. If neither works there is a possibility you need a new clock spring. Unfortunately, my car did...
