When it rains.....it pours. New electrical issue 200 1986

Just couldn't go a week without another issue.....not that I'm complaining mind you. So anyway, this afternoon while driving home with the a/c on and the fan speed on 3 of 4, the speed suddenly jumped to speed 4. I then dialed it up to speed 4 and it sounded like speed 5 if there were a #5. When the a/c compressor would cycle off, the speed would rise just a little, when it engaged it would lower somewhat. When I stopped at a light and the car's RPM dropped to idle, the fan speed would drop. When I took off, the fan speed jumped back up to it's new fast speed. What's up with this. I replaced the blower motor, resistor and switch about 5 yrs ago with a Siemens unit. PITA, but not as bad as I thought it would be. Could this be a failing resistor?
Any help as always is appreciated.

Thanks.

When it rains.....it pours. New electrical issue 200 1986

It did turn out to be a bad new alternator putting out 16.8v at idle without any load. I parked the car in the driveway and once again removed the alternator and will pickup the replacment from Autozone (warranty) tomorrow.
Thanks again for helping me keep my brick alive for another day.

    Hey Bob,

    Quit sending us that rain.

    We've had enough.

The only thing that will make your blower run on 5 when the highest speed is 4 is an alternator problem with overvoltage. It isn't the resistor. The resistor isn't in the circuit on speed 4.

Get your voltage checked soon, as this can start popping your lamps and cooking your battery and radio, among other things. Chain auto store alternators are to be viewed with a jaundiced eye for at least 10,000 miles after installation. I've seen some egregious examples, my friend. Visions of sweat shop labor and stingy use of new parts.

I agree with you Art, the alternator is at full bore. Electrolyte boil-off "cooking a battery" can be a very nasty problem as the longer the battery is over charged, the higher the battery voltage will go resulting in ever-increasing damage to the electrical systems. In a 12V vehicle with an 80 Amp alternator, a maximum of 50 Volts is NOT unheard of.

In short, minimize your driving or shut the car down every 15 minutes or so to let the battery cool down. And whatever you do, do not disconnect the battery with the engine running as the battery is the only thing keeping the voltage down.
