Can't Shift out of Park? 200 1992

My son just called and said he can't shift his vehicle out of park. I explained to him how to release the shift lever by sticking his finger down and pushing the little lever. This worked, however now I have to trouble shoot and fix whatever is wrong.

What should I check and where? Relay, etc.

Thanks Much!

Just a stupid question. And he is pressing down hard on the big square button on top of the shifter knob as he moves the shifter stick from PARK, right? Just thought I'd ask.

Ask your son if his brake lights are working. If not, fuse 7 probably has a tiny crack in the middle of it from stress. Sometimes it makes good contact, so the problem will only happen when things are cold in the morning.

Ask him if the snowflake lights up when he turns on the AC switch. If not, fuse 12 is probably dirty.

Both of these circuits need to work for the shift lock solenoid to operate, although a spilled Coca Cola will thwart even the best electrics.

Thanks to all who have so far responded.

I will check things as suggested and it would be nice if it was just a fuse.

However in case it's not, I have been searching the FAQ's trying to find out how to troubleshoot the microswitch and anything else involved and have only found this for the 940.

Is it the same procude for the 240?

btw-Art-wanted to thank you for your pics and instructions on replacing the blower motor. Came in very handy when I did this a few months back

No, sir, the 940 stuff does not apply to your son's car. There's no microswitch.

Also, if you break the yellow release lever, you won't thereby bypass the safety mechanism -- it is only there to manually push the solenoid's plunger out of the way; it is not part of the shift lock itself.

And, if the car cranks in park, the neutral safety switch is OK for the purposes of shift lock release.

Sometimes the little lever mechanism wears out. I removed it from my '91.

When you say you removed it- does that mean you bypassed and if so, how?

      Thanks

Been a while back and I didn't document it, probably shouldn't suggest it anyway due to liability concerns. I just remember going into the shifter "box" and removing the offending parts. Wasn't just the yellow lever.
This was something I chose to do on my own car, well aware of the "safety" device I was bypassing. The car went to a salvage yard several years later after being rear ended.
