780 seats 700

Hello Volvo lovers,

Several years ago, I found some 780 seats that were exactly like mine and in great shape so I bought them. An ensuing accident that totaled my car slowed but i found another with the same interior. So, I finally got around to installing them. Unfortunately, the seats had been robbed of the controls so I had a considerable job rewiring them. The passenger seat went well but the driver side required some work on a damaged harness (existing one was damaged also). Finally, I got it all set up and tried it out. Everything seemed to work properly except the forward/back movement. It moves from full forward back about 3" but no further. I cannot see anything hindering the movement. Since it moves some, I'm assuming it is not an electrical problem. My thought is the transmission type unit that contains the pinion gear. Would it be possible for this to work partially but not all the way? Does anyone have suggestions? Obviously, I have a lot of spare parts from the old seats. However, it's a bear to change out the transmissions (or whatever they are called) so I would like to isolate the problem first.

Thanks in advance for your wise suggestions!
Patrick

    780 seats-HELP! 700

Here is the latest on the seat saga. I hope there is someone with an idea.

I took the gear box loose from both sides of the seat and the tracks move fine. I decided to try and fool the seats so, while I had them loose, I moved both tracks forward to the seat would be closer to the normal position. However, not satisfied to just have the seat in a serviceable position, I hooked up the power and moved them. They moved fully forward with no problem - then moved two inches back like they did before and stopped. With all that work, I'm right back where I started.

Does anyone have suggestions? At this point, the only thing I can think of is to put everything back on the original frame and change the seat covers to that frame. All ideas are welcome!!!

    HELP!!!
    Patrick

    Patrick,

Had the same problem with my seat. I couldn't see anything stopping the seats movement and had already removed all the controls that automatically move the seat forward when the back is tilted for rear seat access. I finally removed the seat and thoroughly inspected the tracks. I found a very small loose screw that was stopping the seats movement. Once I removed it, the seat worked perfect.

      Michael,

Thanks for the reply! You seem to know a lot about 780 seats. I tried to email you through this site but it bounced.

I have had the seat out, upside down, run a wire through the tracks, and even took the gear box off one side. That track moved well. I have not taken the gear box off the other side because it's a 3 in 1 so rather complicated to remove. Is that my only option left? Will the tracks come off without unhooking too much other stuff? At this point, I'm willing to try anything but don't want to go overboard if it's not necessary. Unfortunately, I've got to do something because the seat is so far forward that I can barely get in!

BTW, sorry to see you are selling your 780. I've been tempted because I picked up an 1800 about 6 months ago. I don't want to use that as my daily driver though...

Update: I've been reading around the Web some and it appears that there is a power seat diagnostic on these things and it may need a reset. Could that be the problem? Could any significant shop do this or am I going to need a dealer?

    thanks!

My understanding is that the "brain" is only for the seat location memory. I'm running a set of 780 seats in my 262C and they work fine without the brain.
The seats can also be operated manually, disconnect the cable at the motor end and chuck it into a drill and it can be moved. This can give you an idea whether it is jammed.
