No water temp reading 900 1993

I have a 93 945 non turbo. The water temp gauge won't work. I have replaced the sensor with a new one and the gauge with a used one but it still wont work. From time to time the needle will pop up and give me a reading but then after about 5 min it falls back to cold.I have no idea what could be causing it.

    Dear dv8oliver,

Hope you're well Dinomartino is correct to point to a bad connection. Sadly, when solder joints fail, they sometimes develop micro-cracks, that are too small to be seen with an unaided eye. Therefore, re-flow the solder on the circuit card. Use a low power (25-watt) soldering iron. Be careful not to allow solder to connect two points, that were not connected. You might want to take photos of the circuit card, before you start work.

You should also clean the wiring harness contacts. A spray cleaner, e.g., De-Oxit, will do this, and leave no residues.

You might want to consider retro-fitting a coolant level sensor. See the FAQs for detailed instructions. This warning light - present on the instrument cluster, at the bottom, but not used on most 940s - will alert you to a low coolant level. There's a way to include a warning buzzer, which is even more useful.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    Spook

probably a bad solder joint somewhere on the instrument cluster circuit board. You will have to pull the cluster and visually inspect the joints for the temp gauge traces (and pretty much all the other ones, too, since they're all vulnerable to failure).
