Rear Shocks Sachs or KYB? 200 1988

Longevity not so important. Regular KYB are 28, adjust are $41, Sachs are $55. Would like to save money if possible, ride is more important than handling. Years ago I got cheap shocks, the ride was so bad I threw them away and got Boge, which were great but were about $35 each then. Would like opinions. Thanks.

I went with the KYB's in front and rear, the gas adjustable ones. The ride was a little stiff, but well controlled. After three years they are still going fine. I also have a set in the front of my 65 Chevelle. They've been in there for years with no problems.

I bought Boge turbo-gas struts for the front of my car. A year later they had lost that nice new feeling.

I bought KYB Gas-a-justs for the rear and have driven many fewer miles on then, and only abouy 8 months, but they still feel awesome.

I recommend the KYB gas-a-justs. I also put them in my mom's ford Ranger before we sold it and it rode great for the short time we had it.

Interesting you mention that, Will, because I bought the Sachs Advantage gas shocks (same as Boge turbo-gas, I think) for my 240 a few years ago and I swear they do almost nothing now. Little or no dampening and terrible rebound control. I've only put about 25,000 miles on them.

Of course, I've also installed stiffer springs and poly bushings all the way around since then. Maybe that's the difference?

I couldn't say right off the bat. I still get dampening, but it's not that quick, tight dampening it was at first. I've put in a lot of new suspension parts too.
I put new rear springs in after a few months because the rear of my sedan started sagging a little. I had replaced the shocks to correct the sag. New stock spring-rate springs from fcp and the same gas-a-justs are bee-you-teeful.

I didn't put any poly in the front. When I did buy the "turbo-gas" shocks, they did mention that they weren't recommended for Turbo cars. I ignored that, maybe that was a bad idea, haha.

Sounds like you need regular old OEM Boge oil shocks.

I'm running the KYB gas in the rear of the '90 wagon. A year later, still running pretty nice.

Rear Shocks Sachs or KYB--or Bilsteins? 200 1989

My experience with Bilsteins: on our '89 wagon-put in heavy duty rear springs and IPDs "heavy duty" anti-sway bar-and the Bilsteins. Worked great for what they were needed for at the time, but came a time didn't need them so switched the Bilsteins for Sachs. Bilsteins were good for when we carried a lot of stuff regularly, but when empty, ride was too stiff. Really depends what you want out of your shocks. Still have the HD springs and the HD anti-sway bar, and with the Sachs it's a nice ride.
