Battery light on after car is shut down 200

Hello,

I have a 1988 volvo 240 wagon. This evening, I got home, parked the car, and shut down the engine. After I shut the engine down and removed the key from the ignition switch, I noticed that the battery light was still lit up. The car does start right up. Car has a new battery and a new alternator, and all grounds have been recently cleaned....

What should I start looking at? Possible ignition switch failure?(even though it seems to work fine) A possible short somewhere?

Pleas point me in the right direction....

Pull out your voltmeter and your Bentley manual and check voltages on the alternator terminals. When this happened to me recently (on a friends 1988 245), the alternator had a bad diode (causing the small red wire to carry 17+ volts) AND the ground wire was of dubious integrity.

Update on the issues with the car.

Drove the car to work today, still with the same problem... Didnt have a chance to look into checking the alternator and wiring... The alternator has been on the car for a little over a week, so I hope that is not the problem.

Anyways, on the way home, I noticed the A/C fan wasnt blowing at the normal speed, meaning that I was starting to lose a charge on the battery... Stopped for some gas, and the starter was turning over rather slow... Got the car started and made it home. Im about to put the car on the charger and take a look at the alternator wiring... Gonna check the wiring beofr charging the battery...

The battery light is still on with the car completely off and the key out of the ignition switch....

What is the system voltage with the engine running?
If it is 13.5 or more you can provisionally get by by UNHOOKING the battery when the
        engine is not running.
Leaving it hooked up with the engine NOT running and the amp light on will discharge your battery, new or old.
If it is 12.6 or less with the engine running, the alternator is NOT charging.
Could be wiring, alternator or regulator.

Found the issue with the car...

Was inspecting the wiring on the back of the alternator. I wiggled a small red wire, and it came out of the connector.

Stripped a bit of the plastic off of the wire, and crimped on a new connector. I then reattached the wire to the proper terminal on the alternator... Problem solved!!!!

          :)

A big thank you to you guys for your suggestions.... :)

          Ken
