starting 200 1987

I recently bought a 1987 240 (fuel Injection) and when i start it in the morning for the first time and attempt to warm it up the engine will stall out. So I now i have to start it put it in gear and give it a lot of gas to get it going but once i drive down the street the car runs fine. I was told that it was possibly the choke. Does anyone else have this problem and possibly know how to fix it?

    Can you describe the stall?

I wouldn't suspect the fuel check valve. It doesn't really do anything other than keep the fuel line pressurized for 15 minutes to 2 hours in the event of a hot restart. Fuel pressure should build to normal within about 5 seconds.

What kind of mileage do you get? What happens if you disconnect your AMM? How does your car idle hot and cold?
FIY an AMM is an air mass meter, measures the mass of incoming air to calculate how much fuel to inject.

Post Back and we'll help you out

Sounds like the check valve that holds fuel pressure between operating cycles has failed. That failure requires that the starting time be long enough to allow fuel pressure to become high enough to operate the injectors.

There is no choke, the need for cold-engine mixture enrichment is handled by the engine control computer.

Try to obtain an owner's manual for your car. The book for the '87 is similar to that for the '86 or '88. Try the brickboard classifieds or e-bay, or whatever you like. Maybe you can look at www.volvotechinfo.com and see if there is any help there. Or you can call 1-800-25VOLVO and ask.

    Good luck,

    Bob
