Re-assembling front seats after major overhaul and improvement. 200 1990

Well, as soon as my new cushions get here I am going to reassemble my front seats and it has been so long since I tore them down that I have kind of forgotten how everything goes. Is there a good site to visit to get a pictorial of how to do it? Also, do the seat heater grids just "lay" against the cushions? How do they "hang on", especially the backrest one? And do the top, smaller springs have to attach to the top of the seat frame or onl the sides? One of my seats had them attached from the top and the other had them going to the side. Huh? Anyway, thanks for any help. By the way, the seat guy (Dave) on E-Bay for the cushions, turns out to be a class act and is professional to deal with. We obviously both had simultaneous melt-down days but now we are practically engaged. I hope my wife doesn't discover us.

You may find the first two topics helpful.

If I remember correctly, There are hogrings halfway up the back and they hook through the heaters. I could be wrong.

The springs... My '89 only had side springs. The later seat had tops. I added extra springs to make sides and tops. I figure the more support in the back, the less likely the rear seat foam will bust through the frame.
Dave Shannon.. I think he was the one doing the new Foam. Very Glad you boys made nice.. He's been on the BB a long time.

David Samuels, I believe, not Shannon.

Thanks for the update, Euroman/Ken, and let us know how the new cushions feel. I have repaired/replaced my drivers seat cushion three times now, and I would be happy to pay for a more permanent solution.

BTW, do you need hogrings? I recently bought a large bag of appropriately-sized rings from eBay and have many left over. I'd be happy to send you a handful to re-ring your seat, assuming you have the pliers.

Correct on all counts. Yes, it is Samuels and yes, I'd love to buy some rings as I do have the pliers. I will broadcast the results of this effort and I am guessing it will be extraordinary. The foam felt silky smooth but firm, I can only think of one other surface/component that I have ever encountered and suffice it to say that it was not Volvo-related. I will e-mail my address and send a check if you let me know the amount.......thank you for your interest/reply.

Well, thanks, Tony. I will both try the site and also look at extra springs. I "wrapped" the backrest foam iwth a stretchy suede-like material and spray-glued it and it is tight and firm, but I like your idea, too. Dave is a good person and I plan to send many tired-fannied folks to him once I have all in order. He has a great idea and the quality of the foam plus the improvements he made are sure to insure a lot of sales/success. Someone had said put insulation under the bottom foam but Dave infused a metal plate into the foam itself to assure rigidity so I don't think I will do that. I am thinking about having someone sew on some vinyl "pockets" onto the back of the seatcovers while they're off to put gloves, maps, guns (kidding!) or whatever in them or just to be cool. Anyway, thanks.
      Ken

I've found that when working on seats (done 2 in the last month) that zipties are great replacements for hog rings.
You kind of need to fish around with some pliers to grab the end of the ziptie through the holes, but they work great and wont rust!

Thank you. That really is not a bad idea. What do you think, Sorron?

Zip ties work well, especially for holding the top of the cover to the bar embedded in the cushion. Then again, maybe the new one doesn't have this? I'm just a traditionalist/purist and feel better when I do thing the "right" way.

Send me your address, Ken. Hog rings are cheap and I have hundreds. I'm happy to send you enough for the seat, gratis, and I can probably drop them in a regular envelope.

              Sean
Thanks for the generous offer. I will e-mail my address to you with the hope that I can reciprocate sometime soon. I, too, like to keep things "correct" but am concerned because my adult son has almost convinced me to replace the inside of my grill with a kind of heavy metal mesh and paint the plastic surround a kind of matching black matt finish. My 240 is charcoal gray and maybe it will look okay. He says to then mount my 100K badge on the mesh......?

I've seen it done, Ken, and it can look pretty good. Sometimes it is a lot more fun to customize than to keep things stock.

Do it if you like it. Disregard what anyone else says.

You are right. I used to like to put a personal touch on my old hoopties growing up and it did feel kind of good. Thanks.

I second the zip ties idea. Rebuilt my seat 6 years ago with zip ties and everything is still holding together!
