'94 945 shows Code 1-1-3, Surges/Stalls 900

I tried posting this before but then didn't see it in the 900 summary. So here goes again.

Our trusty wagon with 150K mi has turned up a problem just in the last week. She stalled once while my son was driving; then fine for a week. Then, after sitting parked for several days, she started with difficulty, and then wouldn't stay running without a foot on the pedal forcing the idle above about 2K RPM. She ran smoothly for a while, but after a stop for gasoline, ran along the highway with surging (ie., intermittent power drops). Engine light came on and stayed on. Around town, she starts and runs sometimes fine, sometimes roughly.

Pulled the code, a 1-1-3.

Do you think it's may be the O2 sensor (or connex?) Tried running some other diagnostics using the "A" module, per the FAQ, and some were fine but I didn't know how to run them all.

Any tips appreciated...am hoping not to strand my son or wife if they do use the car!

After 25 years with 700/900 VOLVOS, I do know this; do not rely solely on any codes you pull. It is first generation OBD & does not always trip the 'puter, many times the code is a result of another problem that eventually affected the code producing event. Although it can point you in the right direction (the post suggesting the MAF is a good start), many times there are other problems that are peripheral to the identified problem that must be addressed for a complete fix.

In your case, after checking the MAF, look for vacuum leaks, intake hose leaks (you didn't mention turbo or not), plug wire arcs, and even some more esoteric items such as fuel pressure & flow.

You did not mention if the check engine light came on which is supposed to happen when a 1-1-3 code is thrown. If not, it just goes to show the iffiness of OBD-I codes.

Wipe the codes and run the car again, then pull the codes again to see if they recur.

One thing I did long ago was to pull ALL my relays and re-solder ALL of them, haven't had a relay related issue since, over 10 years.

Check your Power Stage, make sure it is solidly connected to the fender & that the wiring connections are clean.

    Good luck, write back.

      '94 945 shows Code 1-1-3, Surges/Stalls 900

      Hi,

Thanks for the input. I should have mentioned, yes, I did get a check-engine light on the dash, which prompted me to pull the code. Agree, 1-1-3 is pretty vague to begin with.

I have since pulled the fuel pump relay and reflowed solder; put my hand on it during operation, seems to check out fine.

Took the car to the trusty mechanic. On the way in, had horrible cold start (had to hold pedal down to keep from stalling), and then surging on highway when warm.

He checked the fuel pressure regulator, thinks it's okay. Also feels that if it was O2, position, or crank sensor, he'd see different codes. His feeling is, like in Chris' case (post below), it's the MAF. Suggests swapping it and seeing what happens, while hanging on to the old one.

I see rebuilt MAFs from "Programa" on line for about $170. Anyone have experience with rebuilt MAFs? I think an MAF from the scrap yard would be a total crapshoot.

      Thanks

      -Greg

    Hi Greg,
I have the same car as you and had a similar symptoms recently. In the end, a new MAF fixed it.

You can read about my problem here from the original thread:
    http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/volvo/1425950/940/960/980/V90/S90/intermittant_pinging_hesitation_idle_probs_code_113.html

Code 1-1-3 is a lean misfire. When I disconnected my MAF, the car idled smoothly. Unplugging the MAF enriches the air/fuel mixture which compensated my my car's lean condition. When I plugged my MAF back in, the idle would surge and engine would miss and ping under load.

See if you can find a good used one or a reman one. I got stuck paying full retail plus several hours of troubleshooting from my Volvo $hop.

    Good luck,
    Chris

Hi Greg. I mean this with the sincerest attempt at offering help. Go to the 700-900 FAQ and read the first few paragraphs and You will see where to go(click) next. That said My latest 113 error code excursion resulted in cleaning the throttle body($1 for a gasket and $4-5 for a can of throttle body cleaner), cleaning the IAC(another $4-5 for throttle body cleaner) and the car ran really good. New vacuum lines(about $20 in silicon hose from a site in the 700-900 FAQ), new plugs, wires, rotor, cap, a small mayonaise jar of water through the intake vacuum(free, the mayonaise jar was empty and headed towards recycling)and it ran great. This was on a 1993 240 Volvo with 180,000 miles that was purchased for $500 as it was headed for the junk yard. The FAQ has pictures and enough directions for even an old guy like me who was a business guy can figure it out. You've got a great car with low(for a Volvo) miles that probably just needs some attention. That said there is no one good answer. Oh and clean all the grounds and make friends with the 700-900 FAQ and you will be amazed at how much will resolve itself with a bit of your thoughtfulness and bravery. Good luck and write back. One last thought; the best money I have spent on making my life fun as I play with old volvos is to buy the wiring diagram book printed by Volvo. It tells you where everything is(from relays to brain and everything else), the color of the wires, put together in sections by function.

      Hey guy,

Thanks for the encouragement. I've had 940's for some 15 years now and have relied many times upon the FAQ for maintenance and repair help. (How do you think I knew how to pull an OBD code?) I was just looking for some experienced perspective on 1-1-3 as I haven't had that one before. Car is well maintained after many years of ownership and this is a sudden-onset problem. I am starting to think either of the "FPRs" (every car has two!) Relay...will check the solder joints; regulator, will check the vacuum line and see if it's gassy. Then will check those sensor connex (O2 and MAF) too, along with grounds. Wish I did have a wiring diagram to find 'em all.

Thanks again. Anyone else have insight on 1-1-3?
