First time changing crank position sensor. 240 1990.

Car stopped abruptly on me. Then started up, and stopped again after a few feet. I think its heat related. code 214 is stored in the computer. I can see the wire to the cps sensor is frayed. My conclusion is that the cps needs changing.
I also want to be sure the problem isnt something else thats related.

Of course Im just a little nervous because of all the talk about having to pull the tranny if I screw up. If I can get a little input here, I would feel better about it. Any observations are instructions that you have to offer would be appreciated..

I can see that its held by one bolt. Im planning to shoot a little pb blaster at it tonight, just to losen it up . Unless advised otherwise.
It doesnt look like it should be that difficult. I'll be using a 1/4" drive and extensions.

Please advise.

Thanks.

    Good feedback. Thanks all!

I'll start later this evening. Right now, Im tired.
I'll hit it once more with the pb blaster, then wait awhile. That pb is good stuff.
    I will post results.

    Thanks all.

      Crank position sensor, done! Sucess!

I had a little trouble getting to the thing. Such an awkward position. I used 1/4" drive and extention. I found 3/8" drive impossible to fit.
I did soak, overnight, with pb blaster, and then again about an hr before I started.
When I got the bolt out, the cps came out with no effort whatsoever. I just lifted it out. I suppose it was the pb blaster. Cant swear to it.

Getting it back in was a little challenging. Just stuff the socket with tissue to keep the bolt from falling out while lowering into place, fingers from the left hand guiding things along.

I also found that the wire to the cps had been burned through. Im assuming the culprit was the egr pipe, which is in the neighborhood.

      Thanks all.

Getting the bolt out is the easy part. I did this job last week on my '90 240 while the transmission was out to change the chutch. I could not budge the cps. Ended taking the bracket off, putting it in a vice, and wrenching the cps to twist it off. It was hard to remove even with this kind of access -- too much aluminum corrosion between the bore and the cps. PB may work some, but I suspect it will take a while.

I read the scary stories before I did mine too. Mine came out and went in without an issue. I would recommend 3/8 drive tools 14" extension is about right and a Swivel 10mm socket or a socket and 'U' joint on it.

    Hello,

You can squirt it tonight, but I find that the Blaster works best when wet.

If you can, shock the bolt by tapping it with the hammer to help separate threads from any corrosion.
