Engine Swap 200

I want to replace my B230F engine in my 1986 240DL.

Will any B230F engine fit the engine wire harness? Or do I need to make sure the replacement engine is a 1986-19??.

Thanks

Greg

    Thanks Jim.

Sounds like I can connect the replacement engine to my tranny, and put my old injectors (if different) and distributor (if different) and the engine will work fine.

I was concerned that some of the other sensors (coolant temp, etc) would present a problem.

Any way that you know how to determine the year and model of an engine without the VIN?

If you pick a later year with the crank position sensor, you will need to either swap harnesses or replace the distributor in the donor engine with the one in your '86. There may be other differences in the newer engines. I swapped a 92 engine into my 87 and kept the existing wiring harness, swapped distributors, intakes, fuel injectors and sensors from the old engine into the donor to simplify the project. If you check my sig, there are lots of pics and descriptions of the swap. Have fun!

    Engine Swap 200

    Hello,

I would aim for a late model L block from a 1993 or later and 940 chassis engine. This model has the Piston Oilers.

My actual favorite is the B23F with the flat piston tops because of the high compression ratio.

The manifold may have differences, but if you use the old one, it shouldn’t be a problem.

If you select a 940 engine, you will need to restore the block distributor and intermediate shaft.
