140(145) / 240 parts interchangeability 140-160

I have read the 240 was essentially an evolution of the 140 so many of the parts are interchangeable. The question is, is there a definitive list of what can be swapped over and what can't?

145 parts are hard to find but, my car aside from some exterior and cosmetic stuff has pretty solid mechanicals. I'm just in need of random parts like tailgate hinge, brake and suspension upgrades/replacements, dash, seats, etc.

Is there a definitive list of what works with which cars?

Whatever parts you get from a 240 series, make sure you get them together with the screws and fasteners that come from the 240 car. I once pulled out the outer door handle from a 240 to replace the one on my 74 144, only to realise the screws are different. Fortunately I threw the 240 screws into my toolbox.

On a somewhat related note, and apologies for the content, I have a brand new dash for late 140 (early 240), got it with some spares and I have had it stored for a while now. Dan

The early 240 dash will fit into the 73-74 140s but the HVAC vent holes and the clock is rectangular as opposed to round in the 140 series.

tailgate hinges- yes! ive done it myself, tailgate as well
brake pads (not calipers or rotors)
rear shocks, swaybar and coils (with the 240 upper perch)
    front suspension is totally different.
late 140 and early 240 share dashes and some interior parts
j type OD solenoid can be found on 240s and 740s!(great money saver!!)
The RPR catalog is my favorite replacement part cross reference, very well organized, lots of great factory diagrams and advice, well worth the few bucks!
'75 240 is much more compatable and has some great 140 upgrades, but rare..
get that catalog and happy picking!

I was driving behind a 240 wagon the other day, and I swear that the entire rear door looks identical to my 1970 145. I'm sure all the windows are a direct replacement as well - using my trusty eyeball gauge, they look like a direct swap.

    Hi,
I am rebuilding a 1972 142S and I have had good luck with parts from VP Autoparts in South Carolina.
    Good luck &

    Cheers,
    Dave

The short answer is no, there is no definitive list. The closest you could get to a list is having a parts manual from each model and then compare for yourself. There are parts lists available at gcp.se for pre '73+/- Volvos.

Get to know people on this board with your questions. Odds are pretty good you will get most answered.

Tailgate hinges will interchange, brake & suspension - not so much, upgrades - contact IPD (there are others, but that's the first that came to mind), dash - 73 or 74 might interchange but early models won't, seats - not sure, but I doubt it is a direct fit.

I've got boxes of parts from a few 140 series cars that I used and then dismantled. Send me an email if you're interested.

That's good to know. So parts are still a little hard to come by then. I'll take you up on that offer and let you know which parts I need as soon as a list is made.

I like to think I can figure out most everything on these cars but theres small and custom fit stuff that I wouldn't be able to diy and would need OEM replacements.

VP autoparts looks pretty thorough, has anyone here gotten stuff through them? How are their prices and service? Are the parts all genuine Volvo?

I didn't see what year of 140 you are talking about, it makes quite a difference.
A '74 140 is nearly the same as a '75 240, with exception to the front end, but earlier 140's are quite different for most everything except doors, rear springs, & shocks, trunk lid, tailgate to name a few carry-overs.

All 240 seats can fit in a 140, either wagon or sedan. It is quite easy to take a 140 seat support rail and bolt it to a 240 seat frame, have done it on 4 140's. Rear seats are an easy drop-in. A nice seat if you can find it is leather seats from a 240 GL/GLT. I recently took a set of late 240 houndstooth fabric seats and put into a '73 144.
