any tricks to getting that bolt out of my control arm? 200

Brickboard,

I'm attempting to replace a rusted front driver's side control arm on my 89 240 sedan. I have all the fasteners loose and ready to remove except one. It's the bolt that goes through the front rubber bushing. I have the nut loose but I cannot get the bolt to drive out (and I will need to remove the bolt to remove the rusted control arm). I finally got the bolt to move but now it turns about 1/4 turn and then wants to spring back to the starting point. I'm wondering if the bolt is some how stuck to the rubber bushing. Anyway, please let me know if any of you have any advice on how to get-er-done. I have closed up shop for the day. Need to take a break and let my busted knuckles heal. Thanks.

P.S. My bag of tricks so far has included 1/2 inch breaking bar, propane torch, penetrating oil, 1/2 inch impact driver, air chisel with a flat headed drift, large brass hammer and drift, and several curse words.

Sounds to me like the bolt is rusted to the sleeve. That sounds like bad news.

If you're replacing the rubber bushing, you may cut through the sleeve and the rubber bushing. Or you may melt the bushing with a torch. I'd use a breaker bar and consistent pressure, not bursts of pressure. If you really can't get it, and you can manage it, you can put a floor jack under your breaker bar's end and get some powerful force going.

    Happy Bricking and good luck

Okay, I'm confused...so what else is new?

The front "bolt" on the control arm is not a bolt but a stud that is integral to the control arm. Is that the item to which you refer? If it is, it's no wonder you can't drive it out.

    Excuse me if I misunderstood.

Front Control Arm Bushing Retainer - Lots of Pictures 200 1977

    Hi,

I just pulled the front bolt out of my control arm for fun. After using a 17mm socket on a 24ยจ breakover. The screw came out easily, The nut is a 19mm.

After I removed the nut, the bolt came out with finger force. You might need a pin punch with a drilling hammer, That should dislodge the bolt from the bushing.

      Hello.

I just removed the other BOLT from the passenger side to see if it would bind. It came out with finger force.

      Sorry,

I wanna answer your question from experience, but all I can muster is shock sleeve experience. The expansion caused by adding oxygen to iron is a mighty powerful force, and I know you could turn that bolt end into a mushroom, beat the crossmember out of shape, and the rust might yet remain unfazed. Based on my limited experience, I see a Sawzall in your future. Good luck, and I honestly hope you get a better tip!

Sawzall or cutting zip disk on a an angle grinder... 200

I'm with Art, I did the drivers side a few yrs back on my old rusty 86 245. Nothing I tried would budge it, I ended up using an angle grinder and a thin zip disk cut off blade. It sucked, nothing like melting bushing plastic right by your face...

I'd use a sawzall if I was in the same predicament again, good luck. Find a replacement bolt before you cut anything...

      Cheers
