Could anyone tell me what transmission years will fit into my 97 S90. I believe Volvo switched to OBD2 around this year and I wonder if a non OBD2 year tranny will work correctly. Current tranny is whining through out the RPM range. It still shifts okay, but my wife drives this one and she hates to walk. As the old saying goes, "If momma ain't happy, nobody is happy.

I replaced the tranny a couple of weeks ago and all is well. I haven't changed a tranny in years and this is the first S90. It was much more difficult than a GM with the added bolts and torque convertor bolts access hole but, well worth the effort considering the money savings. Thanks for all the help.

The verdict is in. It sounds like the pump is going out. They want $1600 to $2400 to just replace the bad parts and not a complete rebuild. I found a 98 transmission with 80,000 miles on it at a local junk yard for $400 including convertor. This is probably the route I will go.

I assume you have checked the fluid level and/or changed it recently? (The wrong fluid level can cause the pump to complain.) I would do this before I assume it is at the end of it's life. There are some good instructions for doing a flush in the FAQs. You can also change the filter if you think it is needed. There is a readily available kit at many parts stores including a pan gasket if you ask for a particular LEXUS car. (Volvo doesn't have a gasket for it) Again check the FAQ for the information.

Thanks for the input. The FAQ section was my first stop. The fluid level is right on and the filter was changed about a year ago. The fluid looks and smells great. I have an appointment with a transmission specialty company tomorrow for a diagnosis. I will post the information afterward.
