Cold Start Issues 700

Ok, this is weird. I guess it could be a belt but I'd surprised.

There are two problems and both are during a cold start (car sitting more than 15 minutes). The 1st problem is that the car is difficult to start on a cold start. The problem is non-existant when the tank is full be gets worse as the level gets lower. I'm thinking it must be a fuel pressure issue. The car runs great when warm...

The other problem (or maybe the same problem) is a loud squeal when the car finally does kick after a cold start. I guess it could be a belt, the engine is just starting to kick over (but struggling) when it happens, but it doesn't sound like a belt. Is there anyone who has experienced this strange squeal? If it's not a belt I have no idea what it could be.

Ok, here is a 3rd issue (I forgot mention above). It looks like a developed a leak at the intake manifold at the 2nd cylinder from the front. I could also be coming from the block sensors directly below. Maybe the ECT sensor. Has anyone ever had a problem with a leaking intake manifold?

Thanks in advance for any comments.

    Cold Start Issues 700

I was going to get rid of this car due to holes in the floor and drive it until its inspection sticker expires in February. I like the car so what's probably going to happen is I'm going to end up covering the floors with sheet metal....

The wires and plugs could probably be changed but it runs extremely well when warm.
I agree that it could be the in-tank fuel pump. I was hoping it would be something easier that I overlooked.

Cold start, well ok, the wording wasn't exactly correct. I guess any start after sitting for 15 minutes or more.

The belts are tight and in good shape. I'll probably replace them just to eliminate that variable when diagnosing. The squeal almost sounds like something is getting starved like a pump but I know there aren't any fuel pumps in the engine compartment. I had a friend listen while I started the engine and he said it sounded like it came from the vicinity of the fire wall. Sound travels so hopefully it's just a belt.

The intake manifold gasket was a dumb question but I was hoping it was rare and I wouldn't have to tear the manifold off.

I like this car so if I'm going to keep I need to put some effort into making it last a little while.

I'll change the fuel filter and see how that affects the "cold" start and go from there. Fuel pump next...I'll keep you updated (assuming your interested..lol)

    Thank you for the feedback.

    I wouldn't call 15mins cold start.

    What Year?
    1. Last time you had a tuneup? plugs, wires, rotor, cap
    2. Probably belt. How old are they? deflection in the center no more than 1/4"
    3. Yes.

If you have two pumps, possible that intank pump has failed or is failing. Fuel filter how old?
