episode of lifter tapping...BAD!! 120-130

Hi all!! I took my 65 122 on its longest drive since I've had it. It really did very well overall, about 250 mile round trip. It did have a couple "episodes yesterday on the trip home, both times I was in the process of gaining speed and shifting after slowing down. It sounded like a very BAD lifter tapping very loud I was thinking oh this it ,its throwing a rod or something and we're 85 miles from home. After about 4 or 5 minutes though it seemed to start clearing up and getting quieter. I was on edge the rest of the trip but she got us home. When I got her home back in the barn, I popped the hood and gave her a good listen, sounds better than ever, just purrin like a kitten. Is there something I might have did wrong or is this a sign of valve adjustments or future rebuild of some sort that may be required. Thank you!!!

I agree with Rhys, detonation and not lifters. Lifters will always make noise, full throttle or not, wheras you only had the noise at throttle.

Lets hope you blew a little carbon out during your otherwise nice drive.

Thank you for the assureing responses, I'm hoping that it was a chunk of carbon build up. It did blow some dark smelly exhaust also, maybe 45 miles later. so I'm hopeing the long "put'er to the test" drive maybe cleaned her out a bit. Thanx again!!!

If the noise sounded like detonation or a rod knock, it's possible that your trip on the highway dislodged a chunk of carbon and pinched it between the piston and the flat part of the head. It would happen suddenly and then slowly disappear. Common for older engines. Very little else "cures itself". If it continues to be quiet, all is well.

    What engine do you have?
When did you last replace the fiber timing gear?

B18D and no have never replaced the fiber timing gear! very little has had to be done mechanically, but this has been the longest drive it has been on for many yrs. Is the fiber gear difficult to replace?

Not too bad but you should get your hands on a manual. Use a putty knife to separate the
oil pan gasket from the bottom of the timing cover. (Remove 2 bolts through the bottom first.)
If you decide to update to modern seals I have modified timing covers to use the B21/B30 seal.
